The Magical Garden Coloring Book

The Magical Garden has 23 adorable designs of animals, flowers, and other plants in a sweet garden setting. There are bunnies, bees, fairies, flowers, owls, birds, and much more in the coloring book. The designs are open and fun to color. Though there are a few spots of smaller elements, it is a fairly easy book to color and one you won’t need special pens, etc. to reach into tiny spots

I will go into more detail below, but here is an overview of the book:

design print is clear with no smudging
glue bound
designs stop well before the binding
all markers bleed through paper
gel pens and India ink pens leave shadows on back of page
coloring pencils work well

The designs in the book are printed on one side only of thin, white, non-perforated paper. The designs all stop before the binding though some leave elements unfinished.

The binding is glued rather than sewn, so you will have to cut pages out to remove them from the book. In a few cases, you will loss parts of the design if you remove the page. I was able to easily get the book to lay flat by pressing down once I opened it.

I test all of my coloring books with a wide variety of coloring mediums. You can find the full list I used to test this book in the comments section below. Here are the results of my tests:

All markers, whether water or alcohol-based, bled through the paper. All of my gel pens and my Pitt India Ink pens left distinct shadows of color on the backside of the page. My coloring pencils worked well and true to type and brand. I was able to easily blend my soft lead pencils. My hard lead worked well but left indents that showed on the backside of the page.

I will be using a variety of medium in coloring in this book. Because of that, I will place a blotter sheet below the page I am working on. That will keep the page below ink and dent free. I used Tombow water-based brush end markers on my first project to give it a water-color type effect.

Images of Grace: An Inspirational Coloring Book

Images of Grace is a beautifully illustrated coloring book by artist, Jacqui Grace. Ms. Grace has created lovely Christian greeting cards along with this publisher for close to ten years. In this book, she has created some wonderful coloring opportunities which speak to the spirit as well as to the imagination. I didn’t realize until after receiving the book that the title is a bit of a play on the artist’s name. I think it has a dual meaning and is speaking about God’s Grace as well.

I will provide details below, but as an overview this is what I have found in this coloring book:

designs are printed on both sides of heavyweight paper
some designs spread across two pages
pages are not perforated
glue binding
images merge into the binding
alcohol based markers bleed through page
water based markers and Pitt India ink pens leave shadows
some gel pens take longer to dry
coloring pencils work great with this paper

I am always happy to find beautifully made Christian coloring books. In this book, there are verses (from the New King James Version of the Bible) generally on the left hand page while the illustration is on on the right hand page.

The verses have light illustrations or may have a type of complete this activity to them. In addition to these style designs, there are 29 full page designs and 12 designs that spread across two pages but a number of these are repetitive type designs that I am less likely to color immediately and would be willing to forgo depending on what is one the back of the page and which coloring medium I will use.

The artist has some excellent suggestions for using the coloring book for part of your worship time: Think about the words in the designs and mull over whether God is speaking to you through them. Memorize some of the verses and/or look them up in other translation. Pray as your color. Add your own quotes, thoughts, etc on pages where there is blank space. (My suggestion offer prayers in these spots maybe pouring out what is troubling you that day.) Share your creations.

The designs in the book are printed on both sides of heavyweight, non-perforated white paper. On the two pages spreads, my book is aligned perfectly. Many of the designs have light illustrations or verses on the back side.

The binding is glued rather than sewn so you will have to cut out pages if you want to remove them. Many designs merge into the binding and you will lose portions if you cut them out. I was able to get the book to lay flat by pressing on the inside of the binding. This breaks the spine (i.e. creases it.)

I test all of my coloring books with the various coloring mediums I work with. I will provide the list I used for this book in the comments section below, you are interested. My tests showed these results:

All alcohol-based markers bleed through the paper quite easily. All water-based markers and Pitt India Ink pens leave some shadows on the back of the page. Gel pens did not bleed through or show shadows but all brands I tested, except Uni-ball Signo pens, required extra drying time. Coloring pencils worked fantastic. The soft lead pencils went on thick with little effort and blended beautifully. My hard lead pencils went on darker than usual and I was able to blend those as well. The hard lead pencils did not leave a dent on the back of the page. If you choose to use markers, there is a good chance you will mar the back of the page you are working on and ruin that designs. Be sure to use a blotter page below your work so the ink seeping through is limited only to the back of that page.

I am really looking forward to spending a lot of time with this coloring book. Most Christian coloring books are not quite as well made as this one, so it will be a pleasure to color in. I’m yet sure if I will remove pages or not. I will certainly be using my coloring pencils in the book and will decide about other mediums depending on what is on the back of the page I want to color.

30 Flower Designs and Frame – Rotate your Projects and Enjoy! – printed on one side of the page

The Magic of Flowers: Color, Frame & Display (Color Magic to Frame & Display)

This is a new and really interesting concept. In this coloring package, you get 30 loose leaf flower designs. Some of the designs are white lines on black background but the majority of the designs are simply black lines on white backgrounds. You color your sheet and then put it back in the freestanding frame. You must keep all of the pictures together with the viewable one in the front to give a good framed look to the design.

I will go into more details about the designs etc. below, but here is what I found in a brief overview:

One freestanding cardboard frame
alcohol-based markers bleed through page
water-based marker and Pitt India Ink pens do not bleed through
gel pens do not bleed through
coloring pencils work great with this paper

This is an innovative idea. The frame is a smidge bigger than 6 x 6 x .5 inches. It is in a light green metallic with etched flowers in a silver foil. The back of the frame is slightly accordion in style and folds open to a freestanding position. That portion of the frame is a darker green and is not metallic.

The 30 loose leaf flower designs are printed on one side of medium weight paper and the back of the page is blank. Some of the designs have intricate and somewhat small elements to color.

What I noticed is that the designs mostly go edge to edge for the full six inches but the opening in the frame is much smaller. If you use the green frame, not all of your colored image with show. You can see the difference in my photos (once they post.)

I test all of my coloring books for use with a variety of coloring mediums. I will list those mediums at the end of this review. Here is what my tests show:

All alcohol-based markers (various tips and brands) bleed through the paper. None of my water-based markers or Pitt India ink pens bleed through. Nor did they leave any shadows on the back of the page. My gel pens worked well but all but Uni-ball Signo pens needed a little extra drying time. Coloring pencils worked really well with the soft lead going on thick and creamy and blending easily. The hard lead pencils did not dent the back of the page.

For my first full project, I used alcohol-based markers. I put the design on my clipboard to hold it steady and it worked really well. That is how I will do the remainder of the projects.

Noah’s Ark told through 45 Coloring Designs printed on one side of page

Noah’s Ark: Coloring the Great Flood (Majestic Expressions)

This is a coloring book which shows the story of Noah and his ark. It begins with the time before the Flood and continues through until the end of Noah’s days. It tells (both in word and in pictures) about how Noah was called, the ark was built, the animals gathered, the Flood, and the finding of land. For some reason, spring always brings the story of Noah’s Ark to my mind. Along with coloring in this book, I am using it along with my Bible to re-read and study the story afresh. The Bible verses and cites in the coloring book come from a wide variety of translations.

I will provide details further on but in an overview:

– 45 hand-drawn designs

– printed on one side of white page

– non-perforated pages

– glue binding

– All markers bleed through

– All gel pens and India ink artist pens leave shadows on back of page

– Coloring pencils work well

I think that the designs are well done and show the unique skill of the self-taught artist (Erin Jons). I am enjoying all parts of this book from the animals to the ark itself. There is fun to be add in deciding whether to make the animals life-like (as I did with giraffes) or going for all colors of the rainbow.

The designs in the book are printed on one side of thin, white, non-perforated paper. The binding is glued rather than sewn, so you will have to cut pages out if you wish to remove them. Some of the images merge into the binding and you will lose portions of them if you take them out of the book. I was able to get the book to lay fairly flat by pressing down hard and slightly breaking the binding.

I test all of my coloring books with various coloring medium whether I plan to use that medium or not. In the comments section below, I will provide the full list of brands and types that I tested. Here is the results of those tests:

All alcohol-based and water-based markers bleed through the paper to some extent. My gel pens and India ink artist pens did not bleed through but did leave shadows of color on the back of the page. My coloring pencils worked well with the soft lead going on smoothly and blending well. My hard lead pencils worked well, too, but left indents at the back of the page. As I don’t plan on removing pages from the book to color, I will use a safety page of card stock under the page I am working on. That will keep ink and dents from marring the next design.

Adult Coloring Book Best Sellers: Stress Relief Coloring Book for Adults: Garden Flowers, Mandalas, Animals, and Geometric Designs

I own a couple of coloring books by this publishers. In Best Sellers, they have put together a compilation of designs that appear in other books they have published. I definitely saw designs that appear in Owls and Animals which are two of the books I own. What I like about this book is that it gives you a variety of styles at a low price. This designs from this publisher appear, for the most part, to be licensed. I’ve definitely seen some, but not all, of them in other coloring books.

The designs include: flowers, animals, owls, birds, mandalas, abstract, and cupcakes. The emphasis seems mostly on mandalas. The lion on the cover is included in the book. I choose to color that one first and, as you can see if my photos post, the fun of coloring is that you can interpret designs in many different ways.

The book is a smaller format than usual at approximately 8.25 x 8.25 inches. All of the designs stop well before the binding. The designs are printed on one side of thin white non-perforated paper and are centered well on the page. The binding is glued but there is plenty of room for you to cut a page out if you choose to do so. I was easily able to break the spine by opening the book fully and pressing down hard on the binding area. In doing so, I could get the book to lay flat.

I test all of my coloring books with a variety of coloring mediums. I will list those mediums in the comments section below. Here are the results of my test on this book.

All of my markers bleed through and my gel pens and India ink artist pens leave a distinct shadow on the back of the page. My coloring pencils work well with the paper although the hard lead pencils leave dents at the back of the page. I will use a piece of chipboard or heavy paper behind the page I am working on so I don’t ruin the following page with leaking ink.

Butterflies Coloring Book for Adults

Butterflies is the latest release by Amanda Neel. I own a couple of her previous coloring books, all of which deal with animals (cats, dogs, horses.) It is really nice to see a book with beautifully rendered butterflies. These designs are drawn in a doodle style with the butterflies either by themselves or superimposed upon flowers, plants, or other types of backgrounds. A few of the designs have gray shadowing already pre-printed in to give the artwork an almost three-dimensional look.

I will go into more detail below, but as an overview, here is what I found in the book:

The designs in the book are printed on one side of thin, white non-perforated paper. It is the typical paper that CreateSpace uses and one that I accept when I buy a book published by this company. It doesn’t bother me when the price is low as with this book but they use it on their pricier books as well.

The binding is glued so you will have to cut pages out if you wish to remove them. The designs stop well short of the binding, so you will not lose any part of the design if you cut the out. I could get the book to easily lay flat for coloring purposes.

The artist has used a framing line around all of her designs, which I really appreciate. I always try to note when they include this feature. It gives me a good stopping point and saves me time ad ink when working on a design.

I test all of my coloring books with my increasing stash of coloring medium. I will list those I used in testing this book at the bottom of this review. Here are my test results:

All markers, alcohol or water-based bled through the paper heavily. Gel pens and India ink artist pens left distinct shadows of color on the back of the page. Coloring pencils worked well but the hard leads left an indent at the back of the page.

I do not plan to remove my pages from the book, so I will use a blotter page of card stock or other heavy weight paper below the design I am working on to keep ink and dents from ruining the page below.

Fairy Shampoo: An Enchanted Coloring Book

Fairy Shampoo is a hand-drawn coloring book that has 83 different fairies with fun and whimsical hairstyles. The artist created this coloring book to showcase long and flowing hair. What has resulted is a wonderful book to color. At the back of the book, there is an index which shows a thumbnail of each of the designs. The book is divided into four chapters:

Chapter 1: Fragrance of Dreams

Chapter 2: Fragrance of Friendship

Chapter 3: Fragrance of Love

Chapter 4: Fragrance of Freedom

In each chapter, the focus is on the fairies hairstyles. Most of the hairdos are of flowers entwined amidst the hair or even replacing them altogether. There are also sea creatures, butterflies, dragonflies, leaves and dreams. It is a delightful book to spend time with and showcases the wonderful talent of the artist, Jo So-Jin.

The designs in this coloring book are printed on both sides of white, non-perforated paper. The designs are limited to one page and some of them merge into the binding. The binding is glued rather than sewn, so you will have to cut the pages out if you wish to remove them. If you do so, you will lose some portion of the designs that merge into the binding. I was able to break the spine slightly and get the book to lay flat.

I test my coloring books with various coloring medium (list below) and here are the results of those tests:

All alcohol-based markers bleed through the paper quickly. All water-based markers and India Ink artist pens leave a colorful shadow on the back of the page. Gel pens work well with this paper, don’t bleed through, and do not require additional drying time. Coloring pencils work exceptionally well with this book. The soft lead pencils go on thick and cream and blend easily. The hard lead pencils go on with good color and do not make dents in the back of the book.

If you choose to use markers with this book, you will mar the design on the backside of the page you are working on. I would suggest that you use a blotter page of thicker paper below your working page to keep ink from seeping further into the book.

45 Designs Illustrating the Lyrics to the Beautiful Old Hymn

It Is Well with My Soul Coloring Book

This is a coloring book which depicts the lyrics to the beautiful old hymn It is Well with my Soul. The coloring book is illustrated by Lizzie Preston, who has created lovely designs to match the words (when possible.) The hand-drawn book has 45 pages of designs. It also has 45 pages of lightly illustrated lyrics. The lyrics are printed on the page opposite the design (thus, on the back of the preceding design page.) The designs are primarily nature scenes, with birds, flowers, landscapes, seascapes, forest scenes, ponds, and so much more. The designs include many doodled elements which allow the colorist the opportunity to color with many colors.

The story behind the lyrics make them that much more poignant. It was written by Horatio Spafford at a troubled time in his life in 1873 (though published first in 1876.) Spafford had had some devastating economic troubles due to the Great Chicago Fire of 1871.

Two years later, when his family was beginning to recover, they decided to take a vacation in Europe. While he was delayed, his wife and four daughters went without him. The ship sank and all four daughters were lost. Only his wife was saved. When he traveled to meet her, he wrote the lyrics to the hymn. It is amazing that he could find this type of peace at such a time and are a testament to the strength and peace that God brings. The words of this hymn have given many, including myself, comfort at times when life’s troubles feel overpowering.

The actual designs of the coloring book are printed on one side of perforated white heavy weight paper. Portions of the lyrics are printed on the back of each design page. The binding is glued rather than sewn but you will probably remove pages at the perforations if you choose to do so. The designs stop before the perforations so you will not lose any portion of the design if you decide to take the page out of the book.

I test all of my coloring books with a large variety of coloring mediums. I will list the actual coloring mediums I test in the comments section below. This is what I discovered in testing this book:

All alcohol-based markers bled through to the back of the page. All water-based markers and India ink artist pens left distinct shadows of color on the backside of the page. Gel pens worked well but required a little more drying time than usual. They did not leak through the paper. Coloring pencils worked beautifully with the soft lead pencils laying down thick and creamy color that was extremely easy to blend. The hard lead pencils worked well, the color was deeper than on some less expensive paper, and they did not leave dents on the back of the page.

If I decide to use markers (which I probably will), I will do so knowing that it will mar the lyrics page. For me, that is a fair trade off. I will use a blotter page to keep the ink from seeping further into the book. If you want to color both sides of the page, I recommend using gel pens or colored pencils.

The Art of Laurel Burch(TM) Coloring Book: 45+ Original Artist Sketches to Color for Fun & Relaxation

The Art of Laurel Burch is a coloring book filled with 47 of the beautiful designs of the late Laurel Burch. I have been a fan of Ms. Burch for many years. I have purchased many items with her great designs and fantastic color palette from socks with horses to cat calenders to purses with mermaids and much more.

Many of her design themes are included in this coloring book but the focus is mostly on horses and cats with, unfortunately, very few dog or mermaid designs. I hope this means that this book is really just a volume one and that we will see more coloring books showcasing Ms. Burch’s great talent.

That the designs are taken directly from her sketchbook is evident in the varying thickness of lines. It appears that some designs were done in straight ink pen while others were drawn with markers. That makes the mix a little more unusual and a little more challenging in determining which medium to use to color the various designs. Not a problem but rather something to think about each time I sit down to color in the book.

The book includes (on the inside of the front cover) some representative color images of her designs. The inside of the back cover provides a view of the colors which Ms. Burch typically used. I may decide to go as bold with my colors or I may re-interpret her designs for myself in a different range of colors. That is the fun of coloring you get to decide for yourself.

Some of the images in the book appear to be cropped, possibly for the sake of fitting on the page. Others do not have all of the details included that I recall seeing in other products. At least one design in my book has very faint framing lines surrounding it which probably should have been removed before publishing.

The cover of the book is lovely with a beautiful glossy rendition of Ms. Burch’s artwork with elements picked out in gold foil. The designs are printed on one side of perforated medium weight paper. The binding is glued rather than sewn but you will want to remove pages at the perforations rather than cutting them out. All of the designs stop well before the perforations so you will not lose any portion of the design if you remove it from the book. I was able to break the spine slightly to get the book to lay fairly flat. Once pages are removed from the book, they are sized so that they can be framed in 8 x 10 inch frames. I plan to use a blotter page (chip board or other heavyweight paper) under the page that I am working on to keep ink or dents from ruining the next design.

I tested a wide variety of coloring medium on this coloring book (see the end of this review for a full list) and here are the results of my tests

All alcohol-based markers bled through the page. All water-based markers and India ink artist pens left distinct shadows of color on the back side of the page. My gel pens left a slight darkening on the backside of the page but not enough to show color. All gel pens except the Uni-ball Signo pens took a much longer drying period than what I usually find to be the case. My various coloring pencils worked through to type and brand. My various soft lead pencils went on well and blended well. They were not what I would call thick and creamy but they had good coverage. My hard lead pencils make distinct marks but also left indents on the back of the page.

A Charming and Whimsical Imaginary Country printed on both sides of the page

Romantic Country: A Fantasy Coloring Book

Romantic Country is the imaginary country that artist Eriy created in her childhood. Based on these designs, it is a charming and whimsical land to visit. The artist named this land Cocot.

What is interesting about the designs is the back story on how the artist created them. Apparently, these were the first ink studies she had done and while she remembered to buy ink, she forgot to buy a pen! Being resourceful, she used what was on hand a toothpick. Approximately 700 toothpicks were used to create the designs in the book. The unusual drawing tool gives the lines in the book a faded appearance and provides lines that vary in thickness. These add to the charm of the designs rather than detract from them.

The artist tells the story about the town at the front of the book and then follows up with a detailed description the subject matter of each design at the back of the book. The fantasy land (and the book) are separated by their areas. There are several maps and five chapters. In all, the story adds an event more delightful layer to the coloring book. It makes it a story book of coloring designs rather than simply a coloring book.

The book has a removable dust cover. While there are no elements to color on the inside of the dust cover (a missed opportunity), there are areas to color on the actual brown cover which is attached to the book. The designs are printed on both sides of non-perforated cream colored paper. The ink tones seem almost sepia in nature but it may be because of the toothpick tool.

The binding of the book is sewn rather than glued, so you can remove a few pages at a time by snipping a few threads. Eleven of the designs spread across two pages and, in my book, align very well. Fifty-eight designs are printed on one page. Many of the designs merge into the binding but if you remove pages by snipping threads, you should be able to remove them without loss of any of the design. I was able to get the book to lay flat by breaking the spine. There is a bonus fold-out poster included at the back of the book. My copy was fairly bent up. It appears to have been done in manufacturing as the cover of my book and the package it arrived in was pristine.

I tested this coloring book with a wide range of coloring medium (though, I must admit, I did not try a toothpick!) Here are the results of my tests and a listing of the coloring medium I used in testing:

All of my alcohol-based markers bled through the page immediately. My water-based markers and my India ink artist pens left shadows of color on the backside of the page. My gel pens did not bleed through but required a little extra drying time than ordinary. My coloring pencils worked exceptionally well with this paper. The soft lead pencils went on thick and creamy with little effort. They blended exceptionally well. My hard lead pencils went on distinctly and did not leave indents on the back of the page. I plan to use primarily coloring pencils and some gel pens with this coloring book. If you use any form of ink, be sure to use a blotter page below the page you are working on. The ink will certainly mar the design on the back of the page but the blotter page will keep the ink from seeping further into the book.
