Fantastic start to a new mystery series

The Finders: A Mystery (Mace Reid K-9 Mystery Book 1)

By: Jeffrey B. Burton

Rating: 5 of 5

What a fantastic new start to a suspenseful mystery series. The story revolves around Mason Reid and his K-9 dogs. Vira is his newest dog and, along with Sue (a boy named as such), Delta and Maggie May, steal the show.

What surprised me was that the book was not only a great suspense and mystery book but also really funny. The author has a way of bringing the dogs to life and wraps them around the the heart of the audience.

Emotional drama regarding secrets

The Dilemma: A Novel

By: B. A. Paris

Rating: 4 of 5

When I first picked up this book, I thought it would a suspenseful mystery as were the other books I have read by this author. It turned out that was not the case.

The story is about secrets which are being kept between a husband and wife which have huge impacts upon their family. It takes an awful tragedy to get this two to consider sharing with one another.

The series pivots in this book

Lowcountry Boondoggle (A Liz Talbot Mystery Book 9)

By: Susan M. Boyer

Rating: 5 of 5

I’ve read most of the books in this series and have enjoyed them all. It is a series set on an island just off shore from Charleston. Liz Talbot and her husband Nate Andrews are private detectives. They are assisted, from time-to-time by the ghost of Liz’s high school best friend, Colleen.

In this story, the two are contracted to look into the murder of a professor. His nephew is the prime suspect and looks guilty. They are asked to investigate on behalf of one of his business partners, whom Liz already believes to be guilty in an earlier murder.

Oh, so funny and a great mystery, too

A Brazen Curiosity: A Regency Cozy (Beatrice Hyde-Clare Mysteries Book 1)

By: Lynn Messina

Rating: 5 of 5

This is both my first book by this author and the first book in this series that I have read.

I enjoy mysteries and I also enjoy Regency romance stories. While there is not really a romance per se, in this novel, the elements of a Regency are definitely present. The mystery is front and center.

Beatrice (Bea) Hyde-Clare is an orphan who was, rather grudgingly, taken in by her Uncle and Aunt when she was six years old. She lives with them and her two cousins. She has twenty the last twenty years trying to fade into the background, which is exactly what is expected of her by her family. They also prefer not to be noticed too much. They don’t believe in being too forward or being noticed too much.

Bea is happy to take that role until, at a country house party where her family are guests, she is confronted by a murder. When the investigation makes a wrong turn, she feels she must step in.

Funny start to a cozy mystery series set in Austin

Mother’s Day Out (A Margie Peterson Mystery Book 1)

By: Karen MacInerney

Rating: 5 of 5

This is a really funny cozy mystery set in Austin, Texas. We lived in that city for seven years and much of the attitudes and, certainly, the geographical locations are spot-on.

Margie Peterson is a stay at home mom whose children are going to a pricey preschool because her husband, a lawyer trying to make partner, wants them to go to that particular school.

In order to make ends meet, Margie decides to take on a part-time job. When her resume and the jobs available to her don’t quite meet her expectations, she takes the first job that seems a bit interesting (and which don’t involve walking dogs or cleaning houses.)

Another great mystery in this Sherlock inspired series

Riviera Gold: A Novel (Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes Book 16)

By: Laurie R. King

Rating: 5 of 5

I’ve read a number of the books in this series and have enjoyed every one. I am reading them out of order and find that it is easy to read them stand-alone but I want to read all of them because they are just that good.

In this book, Mary Russell and her husband Sherlock Holmes are on the Continent. Mary has gone by sailboat (believe it or not, as a deckhand) and has ended up in Monte Carlo.) Sherlock is MIA but will eventually join Mary.

Mary has gone for a specific purpose. That purpose is to find Mrs. Hudson. Mrs. Hudson left their employ and has retired but without letting anyone know where she has gone except a cryptic comment (in an earlier book) as she shook the dust of England off her feet.

Wonderful story filled with laughs and a few tears

Miss Cecily’s Recipes for Exceptional Ladies

By: Vicky Zimmerman

Rating: 5 of 5

What a wonderful novel this was to read! At first, I wondered what kind of story it would involved. It seemed to focus on a young woman and her relationship issues. It then took a sharp turn to look at the past of a woman in her nineties.

Kate Parker is in a relationship with someone who seems, to her at least, to be perfect for her. She can’t quite understand why people in her life are not as accepting.

An event happens before her 40th birthday that leaves her scrambling for ways to fill her life during what, she insists, is a short setback in her relationship with her boyfriend.

Hysterically funny and laugh out loud mystery

Double Trouble (A Davis Way Crime Caper Book 9)

By: Gretchen Archer

Rating: 5 of 5

I’ve read every book in this series and some of them more than once. I wait each year for the new entry to appear and dive right in.

Davis Way works at the Bellisimo Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi. Okay, she only works one quarter of the time. What she has been tasks with for the last few months is unbelievably boring.

Not only that, she is now at the mercy of Baylor, who is the individual who used to work for her. Somehow, she still treats him as if he did work for her. Oh, by the way, Davis’ husband runs the casino.

Serious relationships explored

Always the Last to Know

By: Kristan Higgins

Rating: 4 of 5

Over the years, I have read many books by Kristan Higgins. I started with her light-hearted romances and have, more recently, enjoyed her longer, fictional literature with humorous overtones.

This book is different. It is more serious and explores familial relationships from a more realistic viewpoint.

The family in the book is the Frost family, who are maybe but probably not related to Robert Frost. However, they are a big deal in their town, thanks to the hard work by the matriarch, Barb Frost.

Interesting gothic tale set in England

The House of Whispers

By: Laura Purcell

Rating: 4 of 5

I’ve recently been re-reading gothic tales from the 1970’s and 1980’s. I thought I would try a modern novel as well. This is the first book I have read by author Laura Purcell, so I don’t know if this is the genre that she writes usually or if this is a step in a new direction for her.

The story is truly gothic, with a creepy castle set on a high and barren mountain on the Cornish shoreline.

The story is set in two time periods and switches back and forth throughout the telling. Many of the characters exist in both time periods, their past and their present.
