Funny debut book about the unexpected consequences of motherhood
Wake-Up Call (The Wake-Up Series) (Volume 1)
By: Amy Avanzino
Rating: 5 of 5
What a funny and enjoyable debut book by Ms. Avanzino. “Wake-Up Call” is a humorous look at the effects of motherhood and life in the suburbs.
Our heroine, Sarah Winslow wakes up one morning to a life that she doesn’t recognize. The last she remembers, she was a high powered marketing rep with an eye on climbing the corporate ladder to wealth, fame, and success. She had the lifestyle that went along with it – long days of work and longs nights of party time. She was in the top of her physical condition and was looking forward to more of the same in the future.

Charming story of small town life in Goose Creek
The Most Famous Illegal Goose Creek Parade (Tales from the Goose Creek B&B)
By: Virginia Smith
Rating: 5 of 5
What a fun story of life in a small town. The story centers around Al Richardson and his wife Millie. Al is just three years shy of retirement – with his house paid for and all the time in the world to spend traveling and seeing the country. Millie, on the other hand, has a vision of the future which involves running the town’s one and only B&B. To get to this point, she has her eye on a run down (or is it a tear down?) Victorian house. When Millie looks at it, she sees the future; when Al looks at it, he sees dollars flying out of their savings. The two of them spend most of the book trying to convince the other that their plan is the best.

Brilliantly written, compelling and haunting story
Pretty Baby
By: Mary Kubica
Rating: 5 of 5
“Pretty Baby” is a book that got inside my head – both during the time I was reading it and for days afterward. In odd moments, I would start thinking about what I had read and pondering it, both good and bad moments, as if it were something that had happened to someone I actually knew. For an author to have such an impact on me is very unusual. Especially in a good that is anything but “feel good”. Some of the scenarios played out in the story may haunt my waking hours and dreams for some time to come. This is not a horror book but rather a book in which some very traumatic events occur.

Stunning and gorgeous artistic view of the Tropical World
Tropical World: A Coloring Book Adventure
By: Millie Marotta
Rating: 5 of 5
“Tropical World” is the second coloring book adventure by Millie Marotta. It follows her wildly successful and beautiful book “Animal Kingdom” and is every bit as gorgeous.
The book focuses on tropical flora and fauna. The drawings are so well done but the artist has gone to a higher level with her exquisitely patterned details on each and every one of the design pages.

Another great murder mystery from Lea Wait
Threads of Evidence (A Mainely Needlepoint Mystery)
By: Lea Wait
Rating: 5 of 5
I discovered Lea Wait as a new (to me) author with the first book in the Mainely Needlepoint mystery series. I was very happy to see a second book in this series and even happier still when it turned out even better than the first.
Angie Curtis has returned home to Haven Harbor after ten years as a private investigator’s assistance in Arizona. She has agreed to stay for six months to help sort out her soon-to-be-married grandmother’s needlework business. Angie gets drafted into helping a new resident in town (movie star Skye West) sort out the wrecked estate Skye has just purchased. In the midst of this, a death from the past resurfaces and the question is suddenly whether or not the death was from natural causes (as originally determined) or whether a murderer has been on the loose for many years. Angie and her needlepoint crew once again help to solve a crime and do so in a fun and charming fashion.

Third book in series is absolutely charming
Gone But Knot Forgotten (Quilting Mysteries (Mary Marks))
By: Mary Marks
Rating: 5 of 5
The third book is the charm as far as I am concerned. “Gone but Knot Forgotten” is the third book in Mary Marks Quilting Mysteries series. I enjoyed the first book, thought the second book was even better, and now the third book is my favorite. It is great to see a fairly new author grow in her craft and improve with each succeeding book. Considering that the first book was great (apart from some political comments that are not present in either the second or third books), that is quite an achievement.
In the newest book, Martha Rose is once again embroiled in a mystery. The question is – was it a routine death or was it murder? Martha is tapped to become the executor of the estate of her childhood friend. It turns into more than she bargained for and a lot of her old friends are tapped to help her again.

Great Second book in this mystery quilting series
Knot In My Backyard (A Quilting Mystery Book 2)
By: Mary Marks
Rating: 5 of 5
I enjoyed reading “Knot In My Backyard” by Mary Marks. It is the second book in her Quilting Mystery series and, in my opinion, is even better than the first book. Thankfully, the author did not include the political remarks that made her first book a little hard for some readers to get through. I prefer not to be badgered by the left or the right when I am reading a cozy mystery – I want to get away from all of that and just simply enjoy myself.
In this book, our sleuth, Martha Rose, is back and is better than every. Martha has a passion for quilting, and while it is not the focus of this book as it was in the first in the series, there are lots of references to quilting in the story. It is really obvious to anyone who has quilted that the author is also a quilter. I made my first quilt 35 years ago when my first child was born. I still consider myself an advanced beginner because I have not progressed that far in my abilities. There were some clues for hand-quilting in this book that will be of help to me.

More Comedic than Romance but good start to series
What To Do With A Duke (Spinster House)
By: Sally MacKenzie
Rating: 5 of 5
It has been many years since I have read a book by Ms. MacKenzie. I was really pleased to discover that her writing had improved over the years and that issues the last book (rape scene) was not present in this story.
The book is purportedly a Regency Romance but it really is more of a comic romance. The Duke of Hart is under a curse that forces him back to his home for the first time in many years. The curse is that he won’t live to see his male heir born, so he is determined not to marry. He meets Miss Isabelle Catherine Hutting (Cat to her friends), the vicar’s daughter who has sworn herself to spinsterhood. The sparks begin to fly and the outcome is pretty predictable from that point on.

Love story regarding two adults with past issues
Not Always a Saint (Lost Lords)
By: Mary Jo Putney
Rating: 4 of 5
“Not Always A Saint” is a love story involving the saintly Dr. Daniel Herbert and the beautiful widow, Jessie Kelham. They have both made their way to London to find a spouse who will fit well into their lifestyle, but without any expectation of finding someone they can love deeply.
There is an immediate attraction – and one that has a back story and history though Daniel does not recall it at the time. The two of them go back and forth trying to figure out if they want to wed the other or if there is a suitable spouse waiting for them who does not disturb their emotions.

Good mystery but heavy handed on the politics
Forget Me Knot (A Quilting Mystery)
By: Mary Marks
Rating: 4.5 of 5
“Forget Me Knot” is the first book I have read by Mary Marks and it is the first in her series of Quilting Mysteries. It was a really good first book. I just wish the author had stepped off the political soapbox as it probably offended some readers early enough in the book that they put it down and didn’t finish it. That is a real shame as the story, plot, and characters made the book a really worthwhile read. This is the primary reason I rate it 4.5 instead of a solid 5.
