Balances Suspense and Faith admirably with lots of action and emotion
If I Live (If I Run Series)
By: Terri Blackstock
Rating: 5 of 5
While this is the third book in the “If I Run” series by Terri Blackstock, it is the first book that I have read both in the series and by Ms. Blackstock. I found it very easy to pick up mid-series and to be able to keep up with the action. I consider it an easy book to read stand-alone; however, I personally want to go back and read the prior two books so I can see how the characters grew to the point they are in this story.
Casey is on the run, accused of a crime that she didn’t commit. Dylan has become a friend instead of an individual looking for her (he was hired by the murder victim’s family to find her.) By working together (though they are apart), they start to uncover the individuals responsible for not only this crime but many others.

Another great story in this amusing mystery series
The Pajama Frame (A Madison Night Mystery Book 5)
By: Diane Vallere
Rating: 5 of 5
This is the fifth in a series about Madison Night, an interior decorator with a passion for mid-century design. She also loves Doris Day and has more than a glancing resemblance to Ms. Day which is made more evident by the vintage 60’s style clothing that she wears.
In this story, Madison and her boyfriend, Hudson, are still miles apart and that makes life difficult on a personal level. Madison receives a surprise inheritance when one of her friends passes away. Along with the inheritance comes a quest to find out the truth about something that occurred many years before.

Faithful to the original movie but provides in depth look into the characters
Journey Back to Christmas: Based on the Hallmark Channel Original Movie
By: Leigh Duncan
Rating: 5 of 5
I’m a huge fan of Hallmark movies, especially the Christmas ones, so reading a book based on one of their movies promised to be fun. I wondered, though, if the book could live up to the enjoyment of the film.
It did wonderfully. The book stayed through to the screenplay of the movie as far as action. What it added was the thoughts and emotions of the two main characters. It gave a great depth to the enjoyment of the story.
The story is about Hanna, a young war widow of WWI, who is feeling very lonely as Christmas approaches. She takes shelter in a storage shed from inclement weather when lightning strikes and sets the stage for her arrival in the future.

Good beginning to the new and final books in the Shannara series
The Black Elfstone: The Fall of Shannara
By: Terry Brooks
Rating: 5 of 5
I have read some of Terry Brooks Shannara books in the past, but have not kept up with all the stories he has written about the four lands of Shannara. The book stands on its own and it is easy to understand the world of Shannara without having to read all the previously written books of this world.
As the reader is being introduced to the main characters, word comes of an invading force from the north that could quickly threaten the entire land. Tarsha Kaynin, a young girl learning how to control her magic and Drisker Arc, a banished Druid, soon become the center of this story and all that lies ahead.

A crime mystery whodunnit on location in Vermont
Murder on the Rocks (A Red Carpet Catering Mystery Book 5)
By: Shawn Reilly Simmons
Rating: 4 of 5
I’ve read all of the books in this series and am pleased with the newest entry. In this book, Penelope (who owns a catering business which works with film and television shoots) is off to Vermont with her crew.
Before she leaves, she and her best friend and actress, Arlena are meeting with another friend of Penelope’s from the past. Nadia is a professional tennis player and is going to be providing tennis advice for Arlena’s next film (which Penelope is also doing food service for.) An unexpected and traumatic event occurs involving all three as well as others.

Another well written and witty novel by Sophie Kinsella
Surprise Me: A Novel
By: Sophie Kinsella
Rating: 5 of 5
I have long been a fan of Sophie Kinsella, beginning with the first I read by her “Undomestic Goddess”. Her stories always seem to tie to my own life in some fashion. In this, her latest, novel, I easily relate to the issues which come up and evolve in a married life.
Sylvie is a 32 year old woman who, along with her husband Dan (also 32) has just found out from their doctor that they should plan on another 68 years of married life based on their great genetics. They both respond with a fear of that kind of longevity with a single partner and how to keep from getting bored with each other.

A wonderful contemporary Christian novel
The Saturday Night Supper Club
By: Carla Laureano
Rating: 5 of 5
“The Saturday Night Supper Club” is the first novel I have read by Carla Laureano. While I am a Christian of many years, I have not read that many Christian novels. Based on the caliber of this book, I will be reading more in the future. It was an outstanding book to read both as a slice of life novel and as a representation of God working in our lives.
The story, while containing a romance, really revolves around Romans 8:28, (KJV) “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose.” The majority of the characters in this story have had or are going through a major setback in their lives. We are shown that while the individual believes their live is falling apart, God has control of the situation and is leading them to the future He has planned.

An engrossing read with a beautiful and harsh Alaskan backdrop
The Great Alone: A Novel
By: Kristin Hannah
Rating: 5 of 5
When I decided to read “The Great Alone” by Kristin Hannah, I had no idea where the subject would take me. It is a coming of age and beyond book about a young girl/woman, Leni, who is moved to Alaska when her father, Ernt decides it is the next place for them to live. This is after many other moves in the past as he tries to escape the emotional trauma he is left with after being a POW in Vietnam.
Living with her damaged father and her mother Cora, who will not stand up for herself against her husband, Leni
learns first to survive in the harsh Alaskan landscape and then to learn to love the land for all of its harsh beauty.

Another laugh out loud entry in this series about the theater in Arizona (way, way, way off Broadway)
The Phantom of Oz (An Ivy Meadows Mystery Book 5)
By: Cindy Brown
Rating: 5 of 5
I have read and enjoyed all of the Ivy Meadows Mysteries and each one builds upon the ones before. While the book may be able to be read stand-along, I recommend reading the earlier books as so much in this one relies upon the relationships and characters that have come before.
Ivy Meadows (aka Olive Zeigwart in real life) becomes concerned about her best friend Candy Moonpie when Candy returns back to Phoenix in a fairly emaciated condition.

Another fun entry in this British mystery series
The Grave’s a Fine and Private Place: A Flavia de Luce Novel
By: Alan Bradley
Rating: 5 of 5
I’ve read a number of the Flavia de Luce Novels and this most recent one is right in keeping with the rest. Lots of sleuthing with chemistry and poison being a big part of the story.
Flavia de Luce is a young girl with a penchant for chemistry. She and her sisters are away from home, taking a break, after the heartbreaking loss of their father. Their dedicated servant, Digger, is along to take care of them and to provide Flavia assistance with her investigation.
Investigation of what? Well, it seems that everywhere Flavia goes, a death is sure to happen. In this case, she not only takes on the current death but starts looking into the deaths of others a few years before.
