A novel about individuals overcoming obstacles in life

Cottage by the Sea: A Novel

By: Debbie Macomber

Rating: 5 of 5

I have read a number of Debbie Macomber’s books and with each new title, I am more amazed at her ability to portray the emotions that we all feel.

In “Cottage by the Sea”, which is a stand-alone book rather than a series book, Ms. Macomber presents the reader with a group of individuals who each carry the pain of a serious problem in life. Whether it is grief at loss, physical abuse or the emotional scarring of life gone wrong, the issue is explored. These characters then find a way of living life and, at least trying, to get beyond the problems that life has dealt to them.

Kind of like we all have to do.

30 designs of Scenic Italy – printed one side of the page

Lovely Italy Coloring Book

By: Emma Raymond

Rating: 5 of 5

I have a number of coloring books by this publisher but only one by artist Emma Raymond. The earlier book I own is based on Christmas and wasn’t indicative of the amount of detail that is included in this book.

I’m pleased with the views of Italy that the designs in this book portray. The designs show scenic design – some of which are easily identified. There is even a design of the map of Italy that is unusual and will be fun to color as well.

The designs have a nice level of detail without being too intricate for the most part. There is a use of shading that borders on grayscale on some of the designs. Not the entire design, but rather just those shaded areas.

54 intricate and detailed Christmas coloring pages – printed one side of page

The Magical Christmas

By: Mel King and various other illustrators

Rating: 5 of 5

“The Magical Christmas” is a smaller format book (8.5 x 8.5 inches.) The designs are extremely detailed with many small and intricate spots to color. The designs are Christmas in nature with lots of animals as well. There are no Santa Claus or Nativity scenes. The closest is comes is a sled filled with toys drawn by a reindeer and another design of an angelic being.

The designs are highly detailed and due to the smaller format, general intricate to color as well.

While I enjoy coloring in detail, this is not a book I would suggest for anyone who has vision or fine motor issues. It is a book for individuals who like a bit of a challenge in their projects and who like cute Christmas motifs which also include cute animals.

A slice of life book centered around the neighborhood public pool

The Lido

By: Libby Page

Rating: 5 of 5

This is a debut novel by Libby Page. The book tells the story of a community and of the characters of individuals who come together to try to save the neighborhood pool or lido.

Each character is explored through their connection to the pool and then beyond. The action centers on Rosemary and Kate.

Rosemary is in her eighties and has gone to the lido for most of her life. While other children were taken out of the city during WWII to avoid bombs, her mother kept her close at hand so she has never been without the lido. When a posh apartment developer shows up to close the pool, Rosemary is inspired to try to save it.

22 Beautiful and different designs with darker shading – printed one side of page

Vintage Classic Coloring Pages

By: Tatiana Bogema (Stolova)

Rating: 5 of 5

I own several coloring books by Tatiana Bogema Stolova. They are mostly line drawing books though a few have hints of grayscale shading within them.

This is a very different book as the designs are have more shading by use of lines and cross hatch than any of the others do. While there is a lot of this shading, there are still many areas within the designs which are line drawings. The designs are detailed and some have intricate areas to color.

For some, this type of shading might be too much. For others (like myself), who struggle with adding texture to fur on animals, having the extra lines makes coloring easier. It gives me a pattern to follow with my own color pencils strokes.

The subjects of the designs are also very different as they are both more realistic and more fantasy at the same time. The artist states (in the product blurb) that these are different designs which she was asked (by fans) to release.

I’m so glad that she did – it presents a whole new look at her art. I hope that she gives consideration to new coloring books which explore this type of artwork in more detail.

28 more Dreamlings Designs in volume 2 with a copy on white and on black for 56 design pages – printed one side of page

Dreamlings 2: A magical coloring book

By: Edwina Mc Namee

Rating: 5 of 5

This is the second in a series of books about Dreamlings by Edwina McNamee. Just as with the first book, the creatures that inhabit Dreamlings 2 are cute little animals. The focus is on their homes this time around.

There are high heel homes and bee hives houses and so many more. House sprout out of flowers and grow from acorns. There is a house gliding across the ocean and one that is made up a pumpkin. So cute and so much fun to color.

The designs are detailed and fun to color. The designs are not intricate nor difficult to color and do not need speciality pens, pencils in order to do so.

The designs are printed twice – once with black lines on white paper and the second time as white designs printed on black paper. The change in the paper tone gives each design a very different look which I personally appreciate and I love the way that “smoke” appears across the surface of the black page.

Another great mystery in this series set amongst the Amish

A Gathering of Secrets: A Kate Burkholder Novel

By: Linda Castillo

Rating: 5 of 5

This is a series that I have read from the beginning. Each book layers upon the last but each book is also able to be read standalone. I suggest reading the series in order to understand the progression of the characters and their relationships to one another.

In this book, Chief of Police, Kate Burkholder, is investigating the death of a young Amish man in a barn fire. As clues start to add in, it becomes a murder investigation.

As she investigates this crime, Kate finds out more about the dead young man and not all of it is good. As Kate digs deeper, other crimes call out and bring back memories from her own life with Amish.

32 guardian fantasy forest designs – printed one side of page

Guardians of the Enchanted Forest

By: Forest Diver; Published by Storytroll Studios (Julia Rivers)

Rating: 5 of 5

In this second of a series of coloring books by artist Forest Diver, the guardians who are tasked with protecting the creatures of the enchanted forest are explored.

In the first book in the series, we discovered the hidden fantasy creatures who live there. The guardians are stronger and bigger and look more than ready to take on anyone who might wish to cause harm to the hidden spirits.

The book is filled with 32 unique and highly detailed designs based on on the guardians. They are a stronger breed but are every bit as much fun to color. I like strong characters, so having this book rounds out the series for me.

Mr. Diver is a newer artist for me but I am really taken with his style. I have at least one other book that I have purchased with his artwork and look forward to more in the future.

The designs are detailed and, in some cases, have more intricate areas to color. I plan to use highly sharped colored pencils on those areas rather than to find a special nib pen et al.

Confusing read and is it really Christian in nature?

Formula of Deception: A Novel

By: Carrie Stuart Parks

Rating: 3 of 5

I must admit that I was confused by the plot of this book. Right from the beginning, I had the feeling of being brought in during the middle of a scene that had been played out elsewhere. My first thought was that the book was part of a series, so I went looking for the earlier book. Nope – it is a standalone book by an author who has written a series.

I read through the book and as it progressed the main character kept doing things that didn’t make sense and she seemed to be headed for disaster.

In addition to her personal quest (to find her sister), there is another subplot that involves shadowy doings during World War II. I never really put these two things together other than they were in the same book and the same present day individual was involved in solving the issue.

22 Designs in a story book based on the classic story “A Christmas Carol” – printed both sides of the page

A Christmas Carol Coloring Book

Illustrated by: Marty Noble

Rating: 5 of 5

This is more of a storybook with coloring images than it is a coloring storybook. The words of the story take up much of the book with the designs being relegated to a smaller percentage. There are a few full page designs but most are partial.

I find it a good book to complete to read to my grandchildren and have to pass on to them. While not a fun story, it is a good cautionary tale.

All of the components that I would look for from the story are present with Marley and the various ghosts arriving to take Scrooge on a trip of self-exploration.

The designs have a nice level of detail without intricate and difficult areas to color. I will be doing this book in colored pencils as I don’t want bleed through of any sort to mar the words of the storybook.
