Another fine book in the Thunder Point series

One Wish (Thunder Point)

By: Robyn Carr

Rating: 4.5 of 5

onewish“One Wish” is the latest book in Robyn Carr’s Thunder Point series. I have read the entire series – some books are suspenseful, some are funny, while this one is more of a story that slowly builds from its starting point to a fairly predictable end. The two individuals in the story (Grace and Troy) get together fairly quickly and learn how to trust one another and share their pasts, their future plans, and their fears.

Interesting and funny mystery set in Laos in late 1970s

Six and a Half Deadly Sins (A Dr. Siri Paiboun Mystery)

By: Colin Cotterill

Rating: 4.5 of 5

sixandahalfdeadlysins“Six and a Half Deadly Sins” is the first book in this series that I have read. I often read books in the middle of a series. In some, it is fairly easy to pick up the action and move forward and with others, it is a little more difficult. This book is one of the latter. It took me a bit to understand what was going on and it was evident that had I read the earlier books, that would not be the case. That is not a detractor for me, just something that I feel I should comment on as a reviewer. My suggestion is to read this series in order to get the most from the story. If, on the other hand, you jump in as I did, expect there to be a slight learning curve.

Lovely book about three friends

The Year of the Three Sisters (An Anna Wang novel)

By: Andrea Cheng (Author), Patrice Barton (Illustrator)

Rating: 5 of 5

theyearofthreesisters“The Year of the Three Sisters” is the fourth book in a series about a young Chinese American girl, Anna Wang. I have not read the prior three books but after reading this one, I will be sure to go back and read the full series.

The book was surprising to me, as many books aimed at this age group are unrelentingly upbeat and happy. This book is not that. It deals with many issues, including homesickness, loss of friendship, misunderstood feelings, and even loss of a loved one. It seemed to be looking at the way a real 7th grade girl would look at things happening about her. Sometimes she understands and sometimes she just wishes she was back where she was before many of the unhappy issues started. There are also very happy and upbeat moments.

Another excellent book by Debbie Macomber

Last One Home: A Novel

By: Debbie Macomber

Rating: 5 of 5

lastonehome“Last One Home” is a stand-alone novel by Debbie Macomber. Most of the books I have read by Ms. Macomber are parts of long-standing series, so it was a treat to read this book.

The story is about three sisters, though the story focuses mostly on Cassie. Cassie is the rebellious one. She ran away from home thirteen years before – abandoning her family to make a new life with her boyfriend and the baby they are expecting. Life turns rough – really rough for her and her daughter and she is trying desperately to find her way home again.

High tech, fashion, and politics, oh my!

The Knockoff: A Novel

By: Lucy Sykes

Rating: 5 of 5

theknockoffMy knowledge of the fashion industry frankly is limited to watching a few seasons of “Project Runway”, the entirety of “Ugly Betty” and both reading the book and watching the movie “The Devil Wears Prada.” Before choosing this book, “The Knockout”, I wondered if I would glean much from reading it. My trepidation was completely unfounded as the book is as much about office politics as it is fashion and, unfortunately for me and for most of us, office politics are present in most industries.

Beautiful romance with plenty of suspense and mystery

In the Shadow of Winter

By: Lorna Gray

Rating: 5 of 5

intheshadowofwinterWhen I first started reading “In the Shadow of Winter”, I was struck by the beautiful descriptive prose of the story. It was almost as if I were reading poetry rather than a novel. Then the plot caught me in its grasp and I found that the book was as much as mystery as it was a romance.

The story is about Eleanor Phillips, a young woman who is struggling to keep her Cotswold family home after the deprivations of World War II. She has lost her mother long since and her father more recently. Her engagement to the man she loved was abruptly broken years before. She has picked up her broken pieces and is trying to make a home and living for herself and the young boy she has taken in during the war years.

Adorable board book about Kitty Cat

Kitty Cat, Kitty Cat, Are You Waking Up?

By: Bill Martin Jr. and Michael Sampson

Rating: 5 of 5

kittycatkittycatThis is an adorable little board book about Kitty Cat having to get up and get ready for school. The verse is done in a sing-song rhyme and I like to read this to my grandson when it is time for getting ready for his parents to pick him up to go home. He likes to take his shoes and socks off at my house and part of the book is about find the Kitty Cat’s shoes and socks.

The illustrations are so cute, with Kitty Cat doing all sorts of silly things and poses that most toddlers and parents of toddlers can relate to. It is a sweet book and one that we read at least once a day.

Great addition to a fun series

Dollar Daze (The Bottom Dollar Series Book 3)

By: Karin Gillespie

Rating: 5 of 5

dollardazeI just finished reading the third and what was the final book in the Bottom Dollar Series by Karen Gillespie. I am hopeful that Ms. Gillespie is planning on adding new books to her series based on some comments and a contest on her website.

“Dollar Daze” is a fun and funny book that deals primarily with romance in the older set. There are sweet parts, very sad, silly, and even laugh out loud parts. We get to see Mavis and Birdie vying for the same man, Mrs. Tobias being set up with someone oh, so different from her late husband, and finally we get to touch base with Elizabeth and Timothy now that their sweet bundle of joy is born and doing what most sweet bundles of joy do – deprive Mommy and Daddy of sleep and take over their lives.

An outstanding debut novel about love and grief and second chances

The One That Got Away: A Novel

By: Bethany Chase

Rating: 5 of 5

theonethatgotaway“The One That Got Away” is an excellent debut novel by Bethany Chase. I was extremely surprised to find that the author did not have an existing back list of books as the plot, characters, and the dialog of the book were so smooth and well polished that I expected it was from long experience. As that is not the case, I was blown away by the skills shown by this new author.

The book is set in Austin, TX and as someone who lived in Austin for many years, the story sucked me right in and put me in places that I knew very well. Another expectation? I felt sure that Ms. Chase was from Austin but apparently, she actually does excellent research and has a great hand at putting the right references in the right places to make the book feel like home to me.

Another great addition to the Jaya Jones Treasure Hunt Mystery series

Quicksand (A Jaya Jones Treasure Hunt Mystery) (Volume 3)

By: Gigi Pandian

Rating: 5 of 5

quicksand“Quicksand” is the third novel in the Jaya Jones Treasure Hunt Mystery series. The third book is perhaps my favorite so far but then again, it may be that it is the most recent that I have enjoyed, too. The books are all very good. While you can read this book stand-alone, I highly recommend reading the entire series as you will enjoy the characters and understand the nuances best if you have the back history.

Lane Peters, Jaya’s illusive boyfriend, makes a strong comeback in the third book. He wasn’t quite as present in the second in the series and I even wondered if he was going to be phased out. That is certainly not the case – he’s back and he and Jaya work together to solve the treasure hunt mystery in this story – that of a long lost treasure of India.
