Reality of the story doesn’t live up to the premise

Murder on the Last Frontier (A Charlotte Brody Mystery)

murderonthelastfrontierI liked the premise of this story – a young female journalist travels to Alaska at the turn of the century around 1900. Unfortunately, the reality of the mystery was not up to the premise.

The story seemed to be more of a fictional account of female suffrage than murder mystery. While I, as a woman, understand the importance of our predecessor’s battle for the right to vote, it is not what I am looking for in a murder mystery. Of course, it can be part of the story but it seemed to be more front and center.

The mystery itself was a little weak, too. That only the heroine noticed the resemblance between some individuals is a little far-fetched. There would have to be a real tightening of plot line, characters, and general story for me to want to continue to read this series.

I received a digital ARC copy of this book from the publisher, Kensington, via Netgalley.
