Two romances in one – two women find love again after painful divorces

A Girl’s Guide to Moving On: A Novel

By: Debbie Macomber

Rating: 4.5 of 5

girlsguideWhile “A Girl’s Guide to Moving On” is listed as a stand-alone novel by Debbie Macomber, it is really the follow-on to last years “Last One Home.”

In the newest book, we are following the youngest of the three sisters whose life has fallen apart. Nicole’s husband has cheated on her and she walks out taking their toddler son with her. Her mother-in-law, Leanne, has lived with her own husband’s infidelities for many, many years and decides to courageously follow Nicole’s example and finally divorce him.

The story picks up well after all of the above has happened. It briefly touches on what ensued for these two women during the time immediately following their leaving and filing for divorce. However, the story is really about two love stories rather than focusing on how the women got to where they are. I would have liked the book more if it had started earlier in the process and showed how both Nicole and Leanne found their ways.

The love stories are sweet and, as usual for Ms. Macomber, definitely no sex scenes, explicit language, or anything else of that nature. The story shows the developing relationships that emerge. Interestingly enough, both women were married to white collar, upper middle class husbands and now find their romances among the definite blue collar class.

I enjoy reading Ms. Macomber’s books and this is those. While the book is stand-alone in that you can read it by itself, I still recommend reading “Last One Home” to get a better understanding of Nicole’s background.

I received a complimentary copy of this book via the publisher.
