This is the second coloring book I have by artist Kevin Poorman. This book is a variety of 20 hand-drawn designs which range from florals, inspiring words, to really different abstract designs. The over-arching theme is that of being positive. A number of the designs have a heavy use of black. I generally try to use a neon or pastel color against black to make the colors stand out. A number of the designs in this book have intricate and small details.

The book is printed on one side of thin white page which is typical of CreateSpace publishing. The paper is not perforated but as none of the designs merge into the binding, there is plenty of room to be able to cut a page out if you desire. The binding is glued rather than sewn. What is interesting about the layout of this coloring book, is that the artist has specifically left a full blank page behind each design to act as a blotter. That way, you don’t have to have an extra sheet of paper with you to keep ink from seeping through.

All of my markers and gel pens leak through the paper of the book. My coloring pencils work well on this paper. I tested the blotter and it works very well. I tested my water and alcohol based markers and they all seeped through to the front of the blotter page. They did not seep through it. If I were doing a design that was heavy on markers, I would probably still want some extra protection but using Stabilo 88 or Staedler triplus finepoints did not need much by way of extra help.

If I use an additional blotter page, I will put a waste sheet of chipboard (that I pick up at the office supply or on-line) under the page I am working on to keep the ink from ruining the rest of the book. I like chipboard as it can be reused many times as long as you let it dry out in between. It’s inexpensive enough that I plan to have one piece in each of my books so I don’t have to go searching for it.

I received a free copy of this coloring book for test and review purposes.
