Suspenseful mystery set in the Falkland Islands

Little Black Lies

Rating: 5 of 5

littleblacklies“Little Black Lies: A Novel” is the first book by Sharon Bolton that I have read. I enjoyed it considerably and will certainly be looking for her future books as well as reading through her back list of novels.

The book is written in three primary parts; one each for each of the three characters that are most like the killer who is being hunted.

Catrina’s two young sons were killed in an accident because her best friend, Rachel, was negligent while watching them. Since then, Catrina has been just barely living life. She has lost everything that was most important to her and those loses have made the rest of life a pale shadow of what it once was.

The action in this novel takes place in the Falkland Islands – a group of islands that is fairly large in land mass altogether but very scarce in population. In this small group of neighbors, three young boys have disappeared in the last two years. As the book starts, the last of these three has just gone missing and everyone is out looking for him.

It is also coming up on the third anniversary of the day that Catrina’s sons died and the tension is building up for Catrina, Rachel, and Catrina’s ex-lover, Callum. They are all involved in looking for the missing boy and, at the same time, sensing that the anniversary will have an impact on their lives.

The book also looks back at the last invasion of the island by the Argentinians and some of the military actions taken. The author has woven in a PTSD issue for Callum, who was one was in the first group of British military who were sent to defend the the inhabitants of the Islands.

The author does a great job of building tension. The plot is interesting and the story is told in a way that kept my interest riveted. While I had figured out the whodunnit a little earlier on, I wasn’t one hundred percent sure until the end of the book.

I enjoyed the book and recommend it for adults as some of the self-hatred expressed and suicidal thoughts in the book might be difficult for a younger individual to understand.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher, Minotaur Books, via Netgalley in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.
