Rating: 5 of 5

This is a coloring book of 32 full page designs. The designs have many patterns built into the various elements. The designs include single mandalas, layers of mandalas, paisleys, hearts, flowers, owls, and even a beautiful feather with tons of doodle style detail to provide hours of fun for any colorist. While many of the designs are very detailed, the coloring elements are not intricate tiny spots you should be able to color these designs with ultra-fine or fine tips and brush ends as well as sharp pencils.

I will go into detail below about what I discovered in the book, but here is a quick overview:

32 full size designs with lots of doodle patterning
Designs printed on one side of medium weight white perforated paper
Back of page has inspirational quote and lines for journaling
Binding is glued
Designs stop well before the perforations
Alcohol and water-based markers, India ink pens, and gel pens all bleed through this paper
Coloring pencils work well with this paper

The coloring book is by artist Angelea Van Dam, who currently lives in New Zealand. She provides some great coloring hints at the beginning of the book. I have found her suggestions to be very helpful. I had not heard of her before but I am really pleased with the new books she has come out with along with Design Originals.

The book is printed on one side of medium weight, perforated paper. If you have purchased Design Original books in the past, you will know what the paper is like. There are inspirational quotes from a variety of sources on the back of each page along with lines on which you can journal or note the types of coloring medium you used and what date you finished the design. It was very easy to get the book to lay flat for ease of coloring.

All elements of the design are finished or have a framing line around the outer edges. I really appreciate this added touch and try to mention it when I see it. It saves me time and ink and gives my final project a more finished appearance.

I test my coloring books with various coloring medium. I will list those I used in testing in the comments section below. Here is what I found with my tests.

Alcohol-based markers, water-based markers, India ink pens, and gel pens all bleed through this paper to some degree. Coloring pencils work well with the color going on thick. Blending soft lead pencils was easy and the hard lead pencils left dents at the back of the page.

I recommend, and I will use, a blotter page under the page I am working on. That will keep the rest of the book safe from ink seeping through. You can always remove the designs before coloring as well.
