Interesting new mystery series set in Canada

Practical Sins for Cold Climates

Rating: 4 of 5

practicalsinsThis is the first in what I hope is a series (at least one other book) about literary editor Val Cameron. Val is a New York City type of gal of who is sent to a small town in Canada by her boss and sometimes more than a boss to get a contract signed with an author who will “save” the imprint they both work for at their publishing company.

Val doesn’t know (or care) anything about camping, living in a small town, or probably anything outside of the big city. She gets challenged over and over again as she makes her way to the author.

Along the way, she learns about a murder that occurred two years before and wants to be sure that her author was not involved as she has already had to deal with an author/scandal in the recent past.

There are a large cast of characters, which is not unusual for a first in a series. I found that the book was a good and steady read. I laughed at much of Val’s antics in coping with nature for what seemed like the first time in her life. There were also some events (especially those from the past) which were sad and touching.

All in all, I liked the book and the characters. The ending was a bit surprising though I knew something was not quite right with certain characters. Looking back, the evidence was provided in small amounts and I simply missed seeing it. I like when a mystery surprises me as long as it is not an ending that cannot be figured out. I’ll certainly be reading the next book in this series and hope to see more from this author in the future.

I was provided a digital advance reader copy of this book by the publisher, Henery Press, via Netgalley.
