Intriguing second book in series

Kiss of the Sun A Girl in the Maze Thriller

By: R. K. Jackson

Rating: 5 of 5

kissofthesun“Kiss of the Sun” is the first book I have read by R. K. Jackson but is the second in his series of A Girl in the Maze Thriller. I often read books in series out of order to see if a book can be read stand-alone or if it is best to read the whole series in order. While I was able to pick up the gist of the story as I went along, because of the character foundation and prior experiences in the first book, I recommend that this series be read in order.

I enjoyed the book and the concept was unusual with its touches of paranormal “visions”. Martha Covington suffers from schizophrenia and hears voices and sees visions. She has been institutionalized and now, with proper medication and out-patient therapy, she has been released to live on her own. There are people who don’t see her symptoms as an illness but rather as a form of “sight” to help others.

She ends up leaving the island where her disease has been controlled in order to look for someone who is missing. When things start going downhill, she fears that her illness has returned in full-force.

That is when the story goes full-force into thriller mode. Because of her illness, she (and the reader) aren’t sure what is real or not as her path goes into riskier and riskier territory. That there will be a third book is evident as the book leaves some big questions unanswered. I will be reading the first book and then looking for the third one when it becomes available.

I was provided a digital advance reader copy of this book by the publisher, Alibi, via Netgalley.
