simplyscarfieI was curious to try Scarfie yarn and when I found this book of fairly easy crochet patterns specifically designed to use it, I decided to give it a go. The patterns are all rated at least easy (with one noted as beginner.)

The patterns are: Hat and Wrist Warmers, Poncho (this is the beginner pattern), Afghan, Bobble Cowl, Shrug, Ruana, Cowl, Squares Scarf, Ripple Afghan, Scarf, and Diagonal Shawl. The designs work beautifully with the long striping of the yarn and are fun and contemporary looking as well.

So far, I have made the Scarf for my son-in-law (one skein) in silver/charcoal and the Diagonal Shawl in cream/teal for my younger daughter. As my daughter is over six feet tall, I decided to length the pattern a bit so I used 2.5 skeins instead of the two called for.
The Scarf is a really nice unisex style with an unusual look to the stitches when paired with the yarn. The Shawl utilizes a lace style eyelet pattern that also pairs well with the yarn and looks stunning on the diagonal.

I found the patterns easy to follow and the stitch instructions were well done. The instructions are in written format (no graphs) and follow US crochet terms. There is a handy conversion chart to international crochet terms at the back of the book as well as some basic information. As far as I could see, the stitches used were chain, slip stitch, single crochet, half-double crochet, and double crochet.

I plan on making all of the wearable designs in the book in Scarfie yarn. I’m not sure about the afghans at this point but for me to find 10 out of 12 designs that I like is pretty amazing. The cowls are up next for me (already have the yarn purchased.)
