Death by Sunken Treasure (A Hayden Kent Mystery) (Volume 2)
By: Kait Carson
Rating: 5 of 5
This is the second book in the Hayden Kent Mysteries by Kait Carson. It is the first book I have read by this author. I often read books out of order in series to see how well they read stand-alone.
I had some difficulties in the first chapter or two as it seemed to continue from the first book without much explanation as to who the characters were and how they interacted. By around the third or fourth chapter, I had caught up and could enjoy the story. While I think the story can be read stand-alone, I recommend reading the series in order so you can understand the back story on the characters which becomes fairly important by the end of the book.
Hayden Kent is both a paralegal and an experienced deep diver. In this story, both areas of expertise are important. When a client dies in mysterious fashion, Hayden jumps in trying to find out if there was anything nefarious behind the death.
I laughed a bit at how much time Hayden took off from work (I was a paralegal for a time and could not get away with that much absence.) The author even mentioned a couple of times that Hayden might be considered a part time employee if it continued.
It was easy to see that the author has expertise as both a paralegal and a diver. The descriptions of the dives and the equipment used was very interesting and gave a lot of insight into the nuts and bolts of the field.
I’m looking forward to more books in this series and will go back and read the first book as well.
I was provided a digital advance reader copy of this book by the publisher via Netgalley.
