takeanotherlook“Take Another Look” is a psychological thriller that asks whether or not evil is genetic or whether it is a product of environment.

Jane is a young woman, just out of college, when she meets Frank. At first, the police officer seems to be a dream guy but very soon, Jane realizes the dream is really a nightmare. She escapes from him when he tries to force her into an abortion. She runs away from her old life and finds that she is going to have twins. She can’t afford both children, so she gives one up for adoption, Louisa and keeps the other, Harper.

Fifteen years go by and Jane is pulled back into Frank’s life when he is found out for the brute that he is. She bravely decides to give testimony to what he did to her years before in hopes that it will keep him in jail for life. In the midst of this, she finds that there is a long history of criminal violence and mental illness in Frank’s family and Jane has to wonder if her daughter has inherited any of these tendencies.

Shortly thereafter, Isabel (Louisa) and her widowed adoptive mother show up in town. The mother is ill and wants to know that there will be someone to take over care of Isabel if something happens to her. When she is hospitalized, Isabel comes to live with Jane and Harper. Horrible things start happening and Jane has to face her fears that one or both of her daughters have inherited more than physical traits from their criminally insane father.

The story is interesting but does revolve a lot around high school and softball. It is almost a cross over between young adult and an adult thriller. I recommend to someone who does enjoy young adult books.

I received a complimentary copy of this book via the publisher.
