Funny and romantic story with a good touch of paranormal

Ever After: A Nantucket Brides Novel (Nantucket Brides Trilogy)

By: Jude Deveraux

Rating: 4.5 of 5

everafter“Ever After” is the final book in the Nantucket Brides Trilogy by Jude Deveraux. I’ve read the previous two and find that “Ever After” fits in well with the theme. The books deal with couples who meet on Nantucket and who, with a little ghostly assistance, end up finding their happy ever after. The only unusual thing to me was that I didn’t get a feeling of finality at the end of the book. There are certainly enough young men and women in the Montomgery-Taggert clans to keep stories coming into the far future. There are certainly some individuals, such as Todd and Raine, who I would like to have as the main characters in a book.

In this story, an outsider, Hallie Hartley, inherits a house on the island. She arrives after some unusual twists and turns to become a physical therapist for Jaime (James) Taggert. Jaime has been most recently injured his knee in a skiing accident but carries injuries and scars both physical and mental which are far worse. The story tells how these two individuals find their way to trusting one another and learning how to overcome their pasts.

The book deals with serious issues and it also has very funny and light moments – as always happens when the two families get together and sparks fly. Add to that, there are two weddings in this book which finish stories from the prior books. There are also references to what must be much older books as the events occurred thirty years prior.

There are several sex scenes in the book. Nothing too graphic and they are easily skimmed over if you prefer not to read those. They show the individuals becoming closer but are not integral to the story’s development.

The paranormal part of the book is something that I have learned to accept and enjoy in Ms. Deveraux’s books. There is almost always a slight touch of ghostly or other paranormal activity involved. Sometimes, much more than others. This book certainly contained its share and this part of the story is integral to the development.

While the book is part of a series, I think it can be read alone. However, I believe that so many events are intertwined between the three books, that a reader would probably best enjoy this book if they had read the prior two. I recommend it as a really good summer romance read.

I received a complimentary copy of this book via the publisher.
