Great young adult sci-fy

Alive: Book One of the Generations Trilogy

By: Scott Sigler

Rating: 4.5 of 5

alive“Alive” is the first Scott Sigler book that I have read. The book is written in first person, present tense which is always a little jarring for me. It seems like a good number of authors are now experimenting with this. It takes me a couple of chapters to get into a story when this is used and this book was no exception. Once I got beyond my initial discomfort, I was able to focus on the story and enjoy it.

The story is about a group of young women and men who wake up entombed. They are able to get out and the rest of the book is the adventure of them finding out who, what, and where they are. The book is written for young adults and I think it will have a good market there. It was also interesting for me, as an adult, to read.

There is a considerable amount of violence, some of a bit graphic and gruesome, but that is to be expected in this type of story. I would not recommend the book for a younger child because of the violence. There is a bit of bashing of religion (though not any specific religion – just religion in general), again something that happens in this sort of book frequently.

The book is a solid start to a planned trilogy. By the end of the book, the location of the next book is evident and I am looking forward to seeing the characters in that location.

I received a complimentary copy of this book via the publisher.
