A fun romance set in Scotland – Rowena’s Story

Mad, Bad, and Dangerous in Plaid: A Scandalous Highlanders Novel

By: Suzanne Enoch

Rating: 5 of 5

madbadanddangerous“Mad, Bad, and Dangerous in Plaid” is a rollicking good read by Suzanne Enoch. This is the first book that I have read in the series A Scandalous Highlander and there were enough fun references to the prior books that I am sure to go back to read those, too.

The main characters in the story are so much fun. First there is Winnie (Rowena), the heroine who is a Highland lass trying to turn herself into a prim English lady. Her true nature keeps rearing its head and makes for a lot of laughs as she scrambles to get herself back into “ladylike” character. Lachlan, the hero, who is the man Winnie has adored just about since she was born and who has ignored her all along. He doesn’t much like the “lady” Winnie is becoming but certainly begins to learn an appreciation for the Highland lass she has been all along. There are many other characters who assist along the way and a few who perhaps had their stories told in detail in the first two books in this series – they all work together in this story to make the plot a merry and laughable chase.

There are all sorts of shenanigans and tomfoolery as the story weaves its way through an unusual courtship – which entails everything from Highland games (what appears to be a sort of Scots Olympics) to rescues of various types. There are plenty of men trying to court Winnie and more than a few women trying to cozy up to Lachlan.

I’ve read a number of Ms. Enoch’s books over the years and I have enjoyed every one that I have read. She is a gifted romance writer who has a great knack for fun plots, witty dialog, and characters who make me laugh. Her heroines are feisty and fresh and her heroes are handsome and hunky. What more can a romance reader ask for?

I received a copy of this book from the publisher, St. Martin’s (Macmillan), via Netgalley
