The characters and the story were wonderful to read

Postcards from the Past

postcardsfromthepast“Postcards from the Past” is the first Marcia Willet novel that I have read. It is always a real pleasure to find a “new” author who turns out to be an incredibly established one with a huge back list of books for me to enjoy.

The characters in this book seem to have stepped into the book from real life. With Ms. Willet’s excellent ability to describe people and places and to put real words into the mouths of her characters, I felt very quickly as if these were people I knew and cared about. The story is primarily about a middle-aged set of siblings, their kind of relation Dom, and a shadowy figure from their past. The past is woven into the present as the book unfolds and we get to know each of these individuals a little better chapter by chapter. With each, we see some good and some not so good parts of their character.

There is a second story about a young woman at the cross roads of her life. She is trying to determine what job she wants to do, where she wants to do it, and if she is the right material to take on some really heavy responsibilities in a potential new relationship. As a reader, I had my own opinions and I felt that I was trying to nudge her along to make the good (my) choices for her.

Other characters are added in and developed. Not having read any of Ms. Willet’s books before, I don’t know if she is putting them in place for follow-on novels or if they were in the book to give a fullness to the “life” of the town. Either is acceptable but there are some people, such as Sir Alec, Harry and Jakey, that I would like to know a bit more about – how their lives go on and where they end up. From a purely selfish standpoint, I hope Ms. Willet writes more about this beautiful area of Cornwall.

I loved the book and plan to read more by this talented author. I recommend it to anyone who loves a real slice of life novel that has a feel good about life and inspiring message.

I received a complimentary copy of this book via the publisher.
