Captain Underpants and the Sensational Saga of Sir Stinks-A-Lot
By: Dav Pilkey
Rating: 2.5 of 5
This seems to be a series which has lost its steam. I’ve enjoyed reading the books up to and including, the last one, but with “Captain Underpants and the Sensational Saga of Sir Stinks-A-Lot”, it seems as if the author is not really connected with the kids who enjoy his books.
The books seems geared towards a older group, with political references and, oddly, many references to old songs that no children would know. The book is also missing all the silly charm of the potty-style jokes that have been part of the series up until now. The story was a let-down for the seven year old that I read it to – he was expecting a lot of fun and didn’t really care for or understand a lot of it.
It’s too bad as kids have enjoyed these books for years. I’ll keep the last eleven and figure that the series stopped at that point. There are plenty of clues in this book to make me think that the Dav Pilkey is ready to move on to some other storyline. It’s just a shame that, if so, he didn’t finish the series with a bang.
I received a complimentary copy of this book via the publisher.
