outsidethelinestoo“Outside the Lines, Too” is the second in a series of adult coloring books curated by Souris Hong. In this book, there is a compilation of more than 100 different line drawings by different fine artists, graphic artists, illustrators, photographers, street artists, filmmakers and more. The designs are wildly different though they are all quite contemporary in their styles. According to the blurb on the back of the book, this is a new roster of artists compared to that of the first book “Outside the Lines”.

Coloring these designs should be quite fun as each page is a new adventure. With most coloring books, the designs are by a single artist and thus usually have a common look and/or feel. With this book, I can choose to color the design that matches my mood that day. From simple and childlike to angry and complex, there are designs which stretch through the range of my emotions.

The pages of the book, while bright white and smooth, are fairly thin. Because of this, I would put a piece of cardstock under the page I am working on. I would do this with whatever type of medium I am using. While pencils won’t bleed through, they may make a deep enough impression that they slightly mar the finish of the following page. Due to the thinness of the page, in some cases, the design on the following page shows through slightly which might make coloring the design I am working on slightly problematic. Putting the heavy paper or cardstock in takes care of the issue completely and I can move it around to whichever design I am working on currently.

The designs are printed on only one side with the back of each page being blank with the exception of the name of work, the artist’s name, copyright, and their website being printed in small print on the bottom left hand corner. Also, wonderfully, the pages are perforated which makes them really simple to remove from the book.

I am really enjoying just leafing through the pages of the book and looking at the various styles of this talented group of contemporary artists. The only problem I see with this book is trying to determine which design to try first. I don’t own the first book in this series but once I have gotten a ways into this book, I am certain to go back and buy it, too.
