61S4MJ+wUpL._SX327_BO1,204,203,200_This was a really fun and interesting debut of a new mystery series. After read the book, I discovered that the author had written a number of other books but this is apparently her first mystery – which was surprising because it was so well written. Also, she knows what she is talking about with regards to working a farmette. She and her husband have one in the general Northern California area that this book is set in. I visited her Henny Penny website and enjoyed reading about it.

Abby has had to give up her career in law enforcement due to an injury that makes it impossible for accurately hold a gun for any length of time. She has decided to make a go making her living on her farmette. She is keeping bees to make honey and growing other crops as well. Her honey is used by the local pastry chef until he is found dead of an apparent suicide. His brother doesn’t buy it and he hires Abby to try and find his murderer.

The mystery was very well done. Having the “sleuth” of this new series be a former cop makes sense of why she is investigating a possible murder. The small town vibe of the story was fun and there were many characters who made the story even more fun and believable. I really enjoyed all the farming tips, recipes, and other advice provided throughout the story. The information tied well to the story and gave me a bit of an education on things that I am interested in as well. I certainly will be looking forward to the next book in this series to see what happens next in Abby’s life.

I received a digital ARC copy of this book from the publisher, Kensington, via Netgalley.
