Good cozy mystery about a missing groom

Sky High (A Nicki Valentine Mystery Book 2)

By: Susan O’Brien

Rating: 5 of 5

skyhigh“Sky High” is the second book in the Nicki Valentine mystery series by Susan O’Brien but it is the first book that I have read by this author. It was certainly very easy to pick the series up with the second book but I will be sure to go back and read the first book as I think it provides a lot of background on several character. I do think that there are some very real spoilers in the second book for regarding the action of the first one, so if you are thinking about the whole series, I suggest you read the first book first.

In this story, Nicki is now a private investigator who mostly does background checks for employment. She is a widow with two young children and she has to plan her work around her time with them. She has a great mother and a great friend next door who are willing to step in at a moment’s notice to help her out. She also has had a long distance budding romance with her old PI teacher, Dean, who is headed home at long last.

There is a wedding in the “extended” family (her aunt’s god-child is the bride) but when the groom doesn’t show up for the wedding, everything is thrown in the air. He’s not only a no-show, he simply cannot be found. Nicki and Dean are asked to find out what has happened to him.

There are health issues, psychic communications, trips to Florida and more in the pursuit of finding the missing groom. More than half the book is over before we discover a murder has occurred.

The story, while a good mystery, had a lot more to do with some Nicki as an individual and how she copes with single motherhood and her struggles to figure out where she wants her relationship with Dean to head. The book was funny, charming, and also a good mystery with an interesting whodunnit twist. I enjoyed it, have purchased the first book in the series already, and plan to read future books as they come out.

I received a digital ARC copy of this book from the publisher, Henery Press, via Netgalley.
