Interesting and Unusual Historical Romance
The Other Daughter: A Novel
By: Lauren Willig
Rating: 5 of 5
“The Other Daughter” is a historical literature/romance book set in England in the 1920’s. Prior books that I have read by Lauren Willig were set in early periods of English history.
In this story, Rachel Woodley is a Englishwoman in her latter twenties who is a nursery governess for a demanding family in France. She receives (belated) word that her mother is ill with influenza and rushes home to help her – while losing her job because she left.

Translated mystery – more literature than suspense
The Truth and Other Lies: A Novel
By: Sascha Arango
Rating: 3.5 of 5
“The Truth and Other Lies” was listed as a mystery/thriller/suspense book when I chose to read it. After finishing it, I would categorize it as fiction/literature. It is a book that was originally written in German and its reference point is Germany. Due to the translation, it is a little choppy in spots. I have read a number of recently written and translated books and find that this is an issue with all of them. Because of this, I don’t include that as a variable in numbering my review but I do note it for those who prefer not to read a book of this nature.
As I mentioned, the book is literature. There is no whodunnit as we know all along who did it and why. There is an attempt by the local police force to try to find the culprit, so perhaps that is why it is listed as such.

Another great entry in the Thunder Point series
A New Hope (Thunder Point)
By: Robyn Carr
Rating: 5 of 5
The latest entry in the Thunder Point series by Robyn Carr, “A New Hope” is primarily the story of Ginger and Matt. Ginger was introduced in the last book as a young woman who is struggling to overcome her grief at losing her infant son to SIDS only one year before. When this story begins, Ginger has been able to find her feet and is starting to make a new life for herself. Matt is the younger brother of another resident in Thunder Point and is an agricultural scientist and a farmer. He is still in a state of anger over the ending of his short marriage. The story is how these two individuals learn to deal with their previous lives so they can learn to make a new one together.

Humorous Story About Starting Over
A Cottage in the Country
By: Linn B. Halton
Rating: 5 of 5
“A Cottage in the Country” is a lovely story about Maddie, a more mature woman, finding a way to start over again after having her life torn apart when she discovers the man she has been married to for most of her life has found a replacement for her. There’s more to the story and that is part of the story, but suffice to say that Maddie has received quite a blow and has been reeling for a time when this story begins.
It is also the story of Lewis, the local handyman, who has had his dreams dashed when Maddie moves to town but still finds a way to, rather grudgingly, give her a hand in settling down.

A great resource for making socks by hand
101 Socks: Circular Needles, Felted, Addi-Express, Toe Up, Crocheted, and Spiral Knit
By: The Editors of the Oz Creativ Series
Rating: 5 of 5
“101 Socks: Circular Needles, Felted, Addi-Express, Toe Up, Crocheted, and Spiral Knit” is a great book for someone, like me, who is more experienced in a single method of stitching but wants to try more varieties of styles. There are socks and slippers included. The sizes range from infant (knitted booties) to children to adult. At the back of the book, there is a fantastic guide that gives the number of stitches needed for various sizes in the different forms of handwork included in the book.

A fun whodunnit set in exotic 1930’s Hawaii
Wings in the Dark: A Jake & Laura Mystery
By: Michael Murphy
Rating: 5 of 5
“Wings in the Dark” is like a visit back to the old Hollywood version of the 1930’s where men were the tough and silent types who could take it on the chin and the women were good hearted dames who knew their way around an investigation or two.
Jake Donovan is a mystery writer (though previously a Pinkerton detective and a former police detective.) He and his newly married wife, Laura Wilson, are on their honeymoon in Hawaii. Laura is an up-and-coming actress who has a big fan base and, fortunately or not, the two of them keep running into those fans throughout the story.

Murder and Mayhem On the Radio Waves
Beyond a Doubt (A Carol Childs Mystery Book 2)
By: Nancy Cole Silverman
Rating: 5 of 5
“Beyond A Doubt” is the second in the Carol Childs mystery series by Nancy Cole Silverman. Carol is a reporter for a local radio station which seems to be located in Culver City, California. While some of the directions to and from the station (and to a degree, around the Southland) seem a little off to me (I lived in Culver City for almost 30 years and got to know the lay of the land fairly well), the vibe and the personalities of the individuals in the story are dead on for the area.
In this story, Carol has been tasked with reporting on the rash of missing young women and girls who have disappeared in recent months. The story begins with her reporting of the finding of a body of one of the young women, the daughter of a local and prominent judge. The story involves the requisite “whodunnit” which is solved fairly early and then turns on the how and why it was done.

Fun and romance on a cattle drive
Kiss Me
By: Susan Mallery
Rating: 5 of 5
I have read a number of Susan Mallery’s books in the Fool’s Gold series. The most recent is “Kiss Me” which is the story of Phoebe Kitzke, a realtor on a forced vacation, and Zane Nicholson, the cattle rancher who finds himself unwillingly taking a bunch of greenhorns on a quickly slapped together cattle drive.
Phoebe has just received a serious dressing down for some unethical business practices and, in fact, may lose her realtor’s license altogether. During her month of suspension, her friend Maya talks her into joining her on a cattle drive at her ex-family’s ranch in Fool’s Gold, CA. Zane is Maya’s ex-step brother who takes his responsibilities seriously, perhaps too seriously, and that is where the fun comes in.
Phoebe is a kind-hearted and very funny individual. I loved the thoughts, dialog, and actions that Ms. Mallery dreamed up for this character.

An edge of the seat thriller involving K9 rescue
Silent Creed
By: Alex Kava
Rating: 5 of 5
“Silent Creed” is the second book in Alex Kava’s new series featuring Ryder Creed who is a K9 search and rescue dog handler. While I didn’t read the first book in this series, I have read previous books by Ms. Kava which feature a character who is in this book, FBI agent Maggie O’Dell. This series is a definite off-shoot of that series and Maggie is present and a major character in this story.
There is a landslide in North Carolina and it involves a government sanctioned medical research lab. There is a huge rush to get to the site to find out who and what are left after the decimating event. Ryder Creed is called in by a “friend” from his days in Afghanistan. Once he lands and starts his search, the book explodes into action.

Funny Young Adult story of a “fake” paranormal investigator
Jillian Cade: (Fake) Paranormal Investigator
By: Jen Klein
Rating: 5 of 5
I generally do not read books with a paranormal vein; however, the blurb on “Jillian Cade (Fake) Paranormal Investigator” caught my eye and my attention and I thought I would give the book a try. I’m glad that I did. It is a funny take on high school age paranormal investigators located in Southern California. The girl who runs this operation doesn’t believe in things paranormal – she is in a tight position and so she has to do what she has to do (investigate the so-called paranormal) in order to make ends meet and keep the electricity on.
