Good beginning to a legal thriller series

Critical Vulnerability (An Aroostine Higgins Novel Book 1)

By: Melissa F. Miller

Rating: 4 of 5

Critical Vulnerability“Critical Vulnerability” is the first book I have read by Melissa F. Miller. While it appears to be the first in a new series of books featuring Aroostine Higgins, it also seems that Aroostine and her husband Joe have been characters in a previous series of books by Ms. Miller. It did not seem necessary to have read that series to enjoy this new one but there are enough hooks in the story that to make me think that, as I enjoyed this book, I would also enjoy going back and reading the previous legal series featuring a character named Sasha McCandless.

Aroostine is a Native American lawyer who is now working in DC for the Department of Justice. She is taking first seat on a case involving two employees of a mega software computer who are accused of conspiring to bribe a Mexican government official into purchasing their company’s software.

Apparently, someone with some clout does not want this case to go to trial. That same someone is willing to kidnap and even kill to get what they want.

The story is more of a thriller chase than it is a legal thriller, although there are references to various motions and court procedures throughout. A lot of the book seems to throw back to Aroostine’s roots and that of the teachings of her grandfather, who passed away when she was seven years old.

I enjoyed the book and especially the looks back to her childhood and her present day application of those teachings. It was a solid book with a good conclusion.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher, Thomas & Mercer, via Netgalley in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.
