Engrossing read for an afternoon

The Bones of You

thebonesofyouThis is an engrossing psychological murder mystery by an author I have not read before. After having read the book and enjoyed it, I still do not understand the meaning of the title “The Bones of You.” I may be having a dense moment as I am definitely in the middle of a bad cold but it just doesn’t mean anything to me as there were no bones found. Apart from that, I was able to connect and appreciate the story and the story telling of the book.

The book is told in two parts – that of the murder victim, Rosie, and that of Kate, a neighbor who befriended Rosie through their love of horses. The story alternates back and forth. Kate tells the story of the present going forward and Rosie tells first of her own life and then of other lives that she sees following her death. Kate’s narrative is straight-forward, to the point, and without any fantasy. Rosie’s story is lyrical in its reading. Almost more of a fairy tale than of a life – even though the fairy tale is one of those that is harsh and painful.

While I was able to figure out the “whodunnit” of the story before I was halfway through (usually a bit of a turn off for me as I have to slough through), I enjoyed reading and finishing this story because of the beautiful voice of the story teller and the subjects that she was dealing with with a deft hand. The story is not for the faint of heart as it has a lot of painful subjects. Because of this, I would be careful about suggesting it as reading to some teenagers. Otherwise, I recommend it to anyone who likes a murder mystery that is told in a compelling and lyrical way.

I received a complimentary copy of this book via the publisher.
