Christmas Romance with a more serious theme

Finding Father Christmas

When I tuned in to watch “Finding Father Christmas”, I expected the usual sweet and happy ending Christmas movie that Hallmark Channel is noted for. While there was certainly a romance and a focus on Christmas, there was also a more serious theme to this movie. Miranda (played by Erin Krakow) was orphaned at a young age. Her mother was an actress and her father? Well, Miranda has no idea. Her mother would never tell her.

Years later, Miranda comes across a box filled with her mother’s things and in it are some clues which may help her find her out about her father. Miranda throws heart in front of head and decides to go on an adventure to locate her past. In doing so, she ends up in a small town across the country right in time for Christmas.

Miranda meets and comes to care for Ian, Niall Matter, the young man who decides to help her find her father. The answer to this question was a more serious look at behavior than I expect from Hallmark. They handled it deftly and with appropriate gravity.

It was wonderful to see Erin Krakow in a role outside of “When Calls the Heart”. She brought beauty, grace, and a touch of whimsy to her role. The real surprise for me was Wendie Malick, the actress I loved on “Just Shoot Me”. Whenever I see her, all I can think of is the episode with Nina in the Cantina. She was excellent in her role in this film as well and I hope this means we will see more of her in the future.

I appreciated this movie and like the more serious side in it. I hope to see more of this type of movie though I always enjoy the happy ending, sweet romances as well. It’s a real pleasure to be able to have all generations in a family sit through and enjoy a movie together. It’s getting rarer these days but I can trust Hallmark to deliver on good family television.
