withvicsAnother great cozy mystery in the A Mad for Mod series. Madison is back with her buddies Tex and Hudson. She is still struggling to figure out if she wants a relationship and if so, is it with one of these two men. She’s been burnt before and is considerably gun shy of “being back in the game.” Tex is a detective with the Lakewood Police Department. Hudson is Madison’s number one handy man/contractor for help in her interior decorating business – which focuses on mid-century modern homes and furniture.

She is having tremendous problems keeping tenants at her apartment building – the scene of action in the second book in this series. She is struggling to decide whether or not she will keep the building or have to sell it to stay afloat in her business. As her tenants leave one-by-one, Madison is trying to understand whether or not she still loves the building or if the memories of it are simply too much for her to bear.

Added to that, there is a rash of kidnappings occurring in the Dallas area and the kidnapper is targeting single women who have out of state license plates. While Madison has been a resident for a number of years, she has recently purchased a new (to her) vintage Alpha Romeo which has out of state plates and she is concerned about being a target. In the end, both she and Tex are drawn into trying to solve the whodunnit.

Madison is a sleuth I can identify with. She is of a certain age, has some health issues, trust issues, and is struggling with starting and maintaining her own business. She has been a bit of a loner due to a number of issues but wants to break out of that shell. She is also a fan of Doris Day (me, too) so it is fun to hear references to her throughout the story.

I love the references to the mid-century fashions, furnishings, and fixures. I lived in a mid-century modern home for almost thirty years (long before it was trendy) and it is great to be brought back home to those cute pink bathrooms (I also had an aqua one and a kitchen with lovely green and reddish brown tiles.)

This is a fun book and one that I think could be read stand-alone; however, I highly recommend reading this series in order so you can understand who all the individuals are and how they relate to one another. The book contains murder and mayhem, but I don’t think it is too graphic.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher, Henery Press, via Netgalley.
