45 more Star Trek The Next Generation designs to finish the series

I really enjoyed the first of this series of two books and wondered if the illustrators would finish off the series. And they did and here it is. It’s been out for a while and I bought it a bit ago but just got around to testing it for a review. I’m looking forward to coloring in it (though my husband says he has first claim.) I guess we’ll just have to see… or perhaps share.

As with the first book, the designs are printed on one side of the page which allow the colorist to use a much wider range of medium. While my medium of choice used to be markers, due to health issues those are mostly a thing of my past. I’ll be coloring this new book with a variety of colored pencils as those are not a problem at all for me.

I find that the characters are well represented and that the scenes I like from various episodes definitely bring the series to mind. A great book for a Trekkie (husband) or someone who just likes the series and likes to color (me.)

The designs are detailed but not what I would call intricate though there are parts of designs which have small areas to color. The designs are printed on one side of the page with the episode/quote on the opposite facing page.

This is what I found in this coloring book:

45 Designs based on episodes and scenes from later seasons of Star Trek The Next Generation

Designs printed on one side of page with quotes and Stardates printed on the back of the page

Paper is white, heavy weight, somewhat smooth (but with tooth), and non-perforated

Hybrid glue and sewn binding (lots of small stitches). I would not suggest snipping threads with this binding.

Designs merge into the binding area. Cutting out pages will result in some loss of design. I don’t plan to but my pages out to keep the continuity of the quotes/illustrations together.

I was able to get the book to open fairly flat with some effort. You really need to crease/break the spine on this book to get it somewhat flat.

Alcohol-based markers bleed through the paper. I suggest the use of a blotter page with this medium. I like card stock but a couple of pages of heavy weight paper will work as well.

Water-based markers, India ink pens and gel pens do not bleed through but do leave shadows on the back of the page.

Colored pencils worked well with the paper. I tested both oil and wax based pencils and got good pigment though the paper is somewhat smooth. There is still an okay amount of tooth to it. I was able to layer the same color for deeper pigment and multiple colors as well. I was easily able to blend colors using a blending stick.

Here are some sample photos of designs from the coloring book:
