Another great book in this mystery series

Outsider: A Novel of Suspense (Kate Burkholder Book 12)

By: Linda Castillo

Rating: 5 of 5

This is a series that I have enjoyed from book 1. Kate Burkholder is a former Amish who is now Chief of Police in the small town where she grew up. The crimes she solves both the Amish and the rest of the town. She can straddle the differences between the two communities and works hard to solve crimes, no matter who is responsible and who is the victim.

In this story, an Amish farmer comes across a car which is trapped in the snow. He then finds an almost dead woman, who turns out to be a link to Kate’s own past.

The woman is Gina Colorosa, who befriended Kate when she left the Amish community and was down on her luck with no friends at all. Gina and Kate both became police officers and then things unraveled between them.

Gina is on the run and has turned to Kate for her help. Kate’s sense of justice and her feelings for her former friend are in conflict. More and more issues crop up and the danger increases until it reaches a fever pitch.

The problem is that the farmer and his three children are also in the crosshairs, and Kate needs to work quickly to keep them safe.

I appreciate that the author puts dialog into Pennsylvania Dutch and then, immediately, puts the same words into English for the reader. It makes a huge difference in reading books about the Amish.
