Fun start to a Southern Mystery series

Fixin’ To Die (A Kenni Lowry Mystery Book 1)

By: Tonya Kappes

Rating: 5 of 5

fixintodieI really like cozy mystery series and the new Kenni Lowry Mysteries are a fun addition for me to enjoy. This is the first book in the series and spends a little time setting the back story for the characters and the town’s history.

In this series, Kenni Lowry is the sheriff in Cottonwood, Kentucky. She ran (and won) the office after her grandfather (Poppa) passed away unexpectedly. She’s halfway through her first term of office with a stellar record – primarily because the crime rate has dropped to zero during the past two years.

Fun story but the kidnap scenario falls flat for me

My One True Highlander: A No Ordinary Hero Novel

By: Suzanne Enoch

Rating: 4 of 5

myonetruehighlanderThis is the second book in Suzanne Enoch’s No Ordinary Hero series. While I loved the first book, the second book started off with a kidnap scenario. Whenever I see that in a book, the book has a stiff hill to climb to have me enjoy it. While the story recovered itself somewhat, I found that the kidnap still rankled.

Lady Marjorie Forrester is the sister of the Duke of Lattimer. She decides on the spur of the moment to travel to Scotland to visit her brother and be present for his wedding. Because she is doing this off-the-cuff, she and her companion are traveling without guards. It is not much of a surprise that Marjorie is kidnapped but the individuals who do so and why they do so present a funny scenario.

Funny second in series historical romance

I Dared the Duke: A Wayward Wallflowers Novel (The Wayward Wallflowers)

By: Anna Bennett

Rating: 4 of 5

idaredadukeThis is the first book I have read by Anna Bennett though it is the second book in her series of romances involving three sisters (The Wayward Wallflowers.) The series title is based on a nickname that the sisters had picked up in society as The Wilting Wallflowers. Based on the actions of Miss Elizabeth Lacey (the second sister and the center of attention in this book), Wayward is the more apt title.

Beth (as she prefers to be called) has agreed to become the temporary companion to the Dowager Duchess of Blackshire. The Duke, Alexander Savage is the grandson who is rarely to be seen at the London residence where Beth is now residing.

Another great mystery in a fun and informative series

Tightening the Threads (A Mainely Needlepoint Mystery)

By: Lea Wait

Rating: 5 of 5

tighteningthethreadsAngie Curtis is back as “sleuth” in a mystery set in Maine. Angie is running the Mainely Needlepoint group but this time the story is less involved with needlework and more involved with paintings.

Sarah Byrnes is the local antique dealer and Angie’s best friend. Sarah has moved from Australia and has spent the last few years tracking down what might be left of her family after disturbing information about her father’s move, as a child, from England to Australia. She’s found a local man, Ted Lawrence, who is her uncle and who is thrilled to find her as well. His children are definitely less than thrilled as it makes a huge difference in their inheritance.

Fun beginning to a new series with anthropomorphic Cats

The No. 2 Feline Detective Agency: A Hettie Bagshot Mystery

By: Mandy Morton

Rating: 4 of 5

theno2felineThis is a fun mystery with lots of death and mayhem. The characters in the story are anthropomorphic cats – they have the thoughts and actions of humans. What is really funny is that the author has “borrowed” a number of real celebrity humans and has created parodies of them. She has also created characters based on traits one associates with individuals from certain geographical areas, complete with accents and mannerisms.

Laugh out loud funny mystery

Double Up (A Davis Way Crime Caper) (Volume 6)

By:Gretchen Archer

Rating: 5 of 5

doubleupI always have a laugh out loud, fun time reading a book by Gretchen Archer. This one is no different. Between giggles, chortles, sniggers and out loud laughing, my husband was intrigued enough to try to “borrow” my copy before I was done reading it. No way! I had to keep slapping his hand away like an annoying insect.

I started this series in the middle but, after this book, I went back and purchased the first three books in the series. I have to find out how Davis (not David) made her way from small town to big city casino.

Engrossing mystery – fourth in series

With A Vengeance (A Zoe Chambers Mystery) (Volume 4)

By: Annette Dashofy

Rating: 5 of 5

withavengenceThis is the first mystery I have read by Annette Dashofy. It is also the fourth in her series of Zoe Chambers mysteries. I found it easy to pick up the plot and character line even mid-series. It’s obvious that there have been many twists and turns in prior books and I appreciate that the author hinted at some of those without giving away the plot lines of those books. Even so, I think it might be best to read this series in order so you can see the character development.

In this story, Zoe Chambers is part of an EMT crew. When someone starts targeting emergency responders, everyone goes on the hunt to find the suspect before he/she can kill again.

Cozy Mystery set in early 1900’s England

A Death by Any Other Name: A Mystery (Lady Montfort Mystery Series)

By:Tessa Arlen

Rating: 5 of 5

adeathbyanyothername“A Death by Any Other Name” is the third in a series of mystery books which follow the “detective” skills of Lady Montfort and her housekeeper, Mrs. Jackson. It is the first of the books that I have read and I found it very easy to pick up the story without having read the first two books. I also appreciate that, while the author made references to the first books, she didn’t give away the plots. That way I can go back and read the series without already knowing whodunnit.

In this book, the focus is on a hybrid tea rose society who meet at Hyde Castle with Mrs. Maud Haldane as their host and the death (or was it murder?) of one of their members. The death occurred months before the action in this book but the intrepid duo are pulled in to assist in order to clear the name of a (potentially) wrongly accused woman. The woman, Mrs. Armitage, has been accused of using tainted food which then killed the man in question. She has been turned off by Mr. Haldane and will never find another job. Lady Montfort and Mrs. Jackson step in to see if they can solve the mystery.

Lucas is now a carpenter who makes beautiful hand-made furniture. In the old days, Lucas had a huge crush on Kate and it seems like perhaps the flame still burns.

In hopes that some great publicity will land her a much-coveted book deal, Kate decides to announce her engagement (very publicly) to make the splash of news that should seal the deal. When her fiance, Bryan (Aaron Craven), calls the wedding off just as the cameras have started to roll it seems like the publicity stunt is about to backfire.
