A lovely follow-on story in the Tailorstown series

The Godforsaken Daughter

By: Christina McKenna

Rating: 5 of 5

thegodforsakendaughterI have read the prior two books in this series, “The Disenchanted Widow” and “The Misremembered Man”. It was delightful to once again touch base with the characters in the Tailorstown series.

The story revolves around two story lines, although woven in are, to others who have read the series, the familiar characters of Jamie McCoone and Paddy and Rose McFadden.

Ruby Clare, at 33, is the oldest of three sisters. The other two are twins May and June who are in their twenties and who treat Ruby poorly. Ruby has been crushed by the recent death of her loving father. Her mother is not so loving, to say the least. Mammy seems to be doing her best to crush Ruby – especially with threats of having her institutionalized, while at the same time, being the loving and nurturing mother to her other two daughters. Ruby has become the stay at home dogsbody daughter who cares for an uncaring and petulant mother. She is at a transitional period in her life and she tries to deal with her overwhelming grief.

Cute chick-lit book about a chick-lit blogger

Blogger Girl (The Blogger Girl Series) (Volume 1)

By: Meredith Schorr

Rating: 4 of 5

“Blogger Girl” is the first book by Meredith Schorr that I have read. I generally read mysteries, chick-lit and a few romance books as well. This book definitely falls into the chick-lit category.

Kimberly Long is a legal secretary by day and a chick-lit book blogger/reviewer by night. This caught my attention because, early in my own career, I was a paralegal who both wrote and designed by night. I could well understand the crush of things to do that Kim was constantly battling with.

Amusing story about a widow on the lam

The Disenchanted Widow

By:Christina McKenna

Rating: 5 of 5

“The Disenchanted Widow” is the story of Bessie, a widow who runs away from Belfast with her young son, stopping only to take a few prized possessions with her. She is running from a brutal IRA enforcer who was on the outs with her late and unlamented husband. She ends up in a small town with a very interesting cast of characters. The book is a slice of life – not a mystery or a romance. Some of the dialect was a little difficult to follow but the storyline made up for this. The author took a very difficult time in history and was able to insert a charming story into the period.

I enjoyed the novel and look forward to more by Ms. McKenna in the future.

Great Debut historical novel

The Thief’s Daughter

By:Great Debut historical novel

Rating: 5 of 5

I generally don’t read this period of historical romantic fiction (late 1700’s) but the blurb on this book was compelling for me. Jenna Cartwright Kestle is the daughter and sister of well-known Cartwright family of thieves and scoundrels. She, on the other hand, has been able to keep herself from becoming a criminal.

The story begins with a prologue into her childhood and very rapidly moves to her present time with a shocking scene when a poacher is hung for his crimes. We come to find out Jenna’s relationship to the poacher and how she ends up destitute and homeless.

Great first book in a new series

Tell Me No Lies (An Ava Logan Mystery) (Volume 1)

By: Lynn Chandler Willis

Rating: 5 of 5

I was quite surprised to find that this author has a very short back list. I was immediately drawn into and became part of the world she created in “Tell Me No Lies”. I will certainly be reading her other books in the near future and waiting for new books in this series.

Ava Logan is the publisher/editor of the local newspaper in her fairly small town in the North Carolina hills. She is also the widow of a law enforcement officer, Tommy, who was killed in the line of duty years before. She is also the mother of two, a pre-teen daughter and a teenage son, so her hands are quite full with both duties at home and at work.

Sweet story of two people reaching out to one another

The Misremembered Man

By:Christina McKenna

Rating: 5 of 5

This is a lovely story about a farm, Jamie, who has had a very tough go of it. He lived his first ten years in a cruel orphanage. It is also about Lydia, who is the woman Jamie begins to correspond with. Lydia is a woman who has lived her life under the oppressive rule of her mother. She has decided it is time to live a bit. The correspondence between the two is touching but it is very obvious that these two are ill-sorted on many levels.

Another great book in this fun Southern cozy mystery

Ax To Grind (A Kenni Lowry Mystery) (Volume 3)

By: Tonya Kappes

Rating: 5 of 5

The Kenni Lowry Mystery series by Tonya Kappe is one of my favorites. In her latest book, “Ax to Grind”, all of my favorite characters are back and are back up to their usual tricks. Kenni Lowry, the sheriff, is back and is once again battling her feelings for her current deputy, Finn, and battling for her job with her former deputy, Lonnie.

Between her Southern Mama (who is trying to get her to settle down and be a proper Southern gal – including getting married) to her grandfather, Poppa, (previous sheriff who also happens to be a ghost) the story takes off and stays at a high note throughout.

Good entry in this series but a tad easy to solve

Masked to Death (A Faith Hunter Scrap This Mystery) (Volume 5)

By: Christina Freeburn

Rating: 4 of 5

For those who have read the prior books in the Faith Hunter Scrap This Mystery series, this should be a good bridge between this and the next book. For others, it would be a more difficult book to read stand-alone. The relationships in the book have all been built over the previous four books and how the individuals react may seem strange unless you know the background.

For a cozy mystery, there are a lot of evil doings going on on this cruise ship. While there are a couple of instances that refer to scrap booking, on the whole, the book is about the cruise and solving murders. The whole point of the cruise is a wedding between Bob and his long-term boyfriend Garrison, so perhaps not doing scrap booking is appropriate in this case.

A Wonderful Journey In Imagination

The Book of Tomorrow: A Novel

By: A Wonderful Journey In Imagination

Rating: 5 of 5

“The Book of Tomorrow: A Novel” is another journey in imagination with Cecelia Ahern. It has been a real pleasure reading as Ms. Ahern has grown in her craft. “The Book of Tomorrow” is her latest step forward. We are given a lovely story with elements of fantasy woven into it. Not enough to qualify it as Science Fiction – just enough to remember that Ireland is a fey land – where you just might find a leprechaun hiding his gold or a fairy fluttering about.

Interesting mystery set in San Antonio

River City Dead (An Aggie Mundeen Mystery) (Volume 4)

By: Nancy G. West

Rating: 4 of 5

I’ve read a couple of books in this series. It is set in San Antonio, TX (which is a few hundred miles south of where I currently live.) When I lived in Austin, my husband and I would routinely drive down to San Antonio for concerts and some find shopping and dining experiences. The book does a wonderful job of describing the city as it is today and gives a great bit of information about its history.

The book is a entry in a series about Aggie Mundeen. Aggie is a Chicago native who has moved to Texas and is still finding her feet after a few years. She has a would-be boyfriend, Sam, who is a detective and a job has an advice guru on aging and getting fit.
