Lovely Christian stories of romance

The Flower Brides (Grace Livingston Hill Classics) (Love Endures)

By: Grace Livingston Hill

Rating: 5 of 5

theflowerbridesGrace Livingston Hill is beloved around the world for her beautifully written Christian love stories. I first read her books more than forty years ago as a fairly young girl. At the time, I didn’t realize when they had been written (as she passed away in 1947) but I knew that the stories meant a lot to me and gave a wonderful message as well as a lovely story.

More autobiography than a knitting project book

Knit the Sky: Cultivate Your Creativity with a Playful Way of Knitting

By: Lea Redmond

Rating: 4 of 5

knitthesky“Knit the Sky” is an interesting discussion of one woman’s thoughts about knitting and life. It is very different from what I was expecting; however, I had never heard of Lea Redmond before reading her book. Apparently, she is fairly well-known for some knitting challenges but, as I said, I had never heard of her.

Another wonderful installment in the Rose Harbor series

Silver Linings: A Rose Harbor Novel

By: Debbie Macomber

Rating: 5 of 5

silverliningsI found Debbie Macomber as an author with the first of the Rose Harbor novels (“The Inn at Rose Harbor”). What grabbed me from the first was her ability to eloquently describe the feelings of grief and loss that the main character, Jo Marie Rose, deals with when she discovers her husband is missing in action and presumed lost. Throughout the series, and especially in this book “Silver Linings”, Ms. Macomber continues to astound me with her ability to express feelings – both good and not good in a way that I can relate to. Once again, I spent a good portion of this book laughing and crying. I honestly don’t know what more you can ask from a novel about life.

Outlines are in color for a different kind of coloring fun – designs printed on one side of perforated page

Creative Haven Paisley Mandalas: Designs with a Splash of Color (Adult Coloring)

By: Shala Kerrigan

Rating: 5 of 5

“Paisley Mandalas – Designs With A Splash of Color” is a first for me – I’ve never had an adult coloring book which has pre-printed colors in it. Sometimes, the colors are merely the outlines of the design. Other times, color is filled in as part of the design. It is a new experience for me and one that seems to be okay so far. It certainly reduces the amount of time I spend on some of the designs. Of the two styles, only three are not the outline style.

The designs are by artist Shala Kerrigan and I noted that there is a disclaimer on the back of the book that says that the book was previously published as “Paisley Mandalas Coloring Book.” I don’t know if that issue was done in color or not, but if you have it on your book shelf, you might want to check before ordering this book.

The designs are quite pretty and are large and easy to color. I will not be needing my magnifying lamp for this book. I will need to give a lot more thought to the colors I choose as they will need to work with the pre-printed ones. I must admit that of the two styles, I prefer the outline one. It gives me the opportunity to either compliment or contrast my colors against the outline. The three more extensively colored designs leave a lot less for me to decide on.

Excellent but dated older cookbook by a master chef

The Complete Book of Outdoor Cookery

By: James Beard and Helen Evans Brown

Rating: 5 of 5

completebookofoutdoorcookeryThis is an excellent book regarding cooking on outdoor grills. Especially for the time at which it was originally published. Some of the grilling methods are dated and some of the methods of cooking (or rather not cooking) some items are not current to health standards of today.

Fun Dinosaur Amigurumi that are easy to stitch

Dinosaur Amigurumi

By: Justyna Kacprzak

Rating: 5 of 5

dinosauramigurumi“Dinosaur Amigurumi” by Justyna Kacprzak is a easy to read and fairly easy to crochet set of dinosaurs. The pattern directions are well thought out and written. The dinosaurs themselves are quite cute and should be a hit with any dinosaur lover. As they are a little on the simple side (which is best for me as a crocheter), don’t look for a lot of detail and definition.

Great near future political thriller – great vacation or travel read

Drone Command (A Troy Pearce Novel)

By: Mike Maden

Rating: 5 of 5

dronecommandSometimes when I take a long plane flight or before taking a vacation, I will pick a book that is a little bit different just because it is a good time to try something a little out of the ordinary. This is that type of book for me. What intrigued me about this book was the subject matter. Once I started reading it, I found myself engrossed and knew I had made a good choice. At approximately 330 pages long, the book is fast paced and an easy read.

“Drone Command” is a political thriller that centers around a crisis between China, US, Japan where the main character, Troy Pearce, and others need to fix things quickly before the world plunges into war.

Not as compelling a read as the first in this series

Protocol Zero (A Joe Rush Novel)

By: James Abel

Rating: 3 of 5

protocolzero“Protocol Zero” was a bit of a let-down following James Abel’s debut thriller, “White Plague”. These are the first two books of a series involving Joe Rush, a Marine Colonel who is also a medical doctor and a bio-terrorist expert.

While the author gives the reader a lot of information about a lot of various things in this book, what it lacks is a moment in which I am, as the reader, so caught up in the action that I can’t put the book down. “White Plague” was a book that I wanted to read in one sitting. I read this book over the space of a week and the last 50 pages or so over three days by themselves.

Great City designs with a fun Hidden Picture twist

Creative Haven CityScapes: A Coloring Book with a Hidden Picture Twist (Adult Coloring)

By: Alexandra Cowell

Rating: 5 of 5

This is a really great set of 28 city style designs which include one or more hidden images within each design. The cities are from all over the globe. The designs are by artist Alexandra Cowell. There is a fun vibe to each and every one of these designs. They should be a blast to color.

The cities represented ( in order) in this book are: Amsterdam, Bangkok, Barcelona, Buenos Aires, Cape Town, Chicago, Copenhagen, Delhi, Edinburgh, Firenze, Hong Kong, Las Vegas, Lisbon, London, Hollywood, Marrakesch, South Beach (Miami), New York City, Paris, Rio de Janeiro, Rome, San Diego, San Francisco, St. Petersburg, Sydney, Vancouver, Venezia/Venice. I’ve visited a number of these cities during my lifetime and the ones that I haven’t would be ones that I wish I can visit at some time. Until then, coloring them will be a great first step.

The designs all show a scene depicting something that is generally thought of when considering that specific city. For instance, San Francisco shows Lombard Street with its twisting and turning downhill plunge. Las Vegas shows a bunch of slot machines with a wild sky-scape in the background. London shows the Palace and shopping fun along with umbrellas for the good chance of rain.

At the front of the book, there is a listing of which hidden design features are included and how many of them are spread throughout the book. At the back of the book, there is a key which shows which elements are in each design and where they are located. I would list the hidden elements but I think that would take away the fun of looking for them while you are coloring.

Another fun mystery in a gardening series

Between a Rock and a Hard Place: A Potting Shed Mystery (Potting Shed Mystery series Book 3)

By: Marty Wingate

Rating: 5 of 5

betweenarockandahard“Between a Rock and a Hard Place” is the third in a series of Potting Shed mysteries by Marty Wingate. I have read all three and also her debut mystery in another series. After four books, I know and am comfortable with her style.

In this story, the relationship between our gardening sleuth, Pru Parke and her beau, Detective Chief Inspector Christopher Pearse, have progressed and wedding bells are in the future. In the meantime, Pru has accepted a temporary position in Edinburgh, doing research and writing a to-be-published paper on the subject.
