Fun and adventurous book set on Planet Ed

Willy Maykit in Space

By: Greg Trine and James Burks

Rating: 4.5 of 5

willymakitinspaceThis is a great book for the recommended age group (7 to 10 years.) It has action, adventure, knock-knock jokes, silly plays on names and more. The book is made up of short chapters and is printed in largish print with plenty of spacing. There are a few black and white illustrations throughout that help keep the action going.

A great debut mystery – one of the best I have read in a long time

The Deep End (The Country Club Murders) (Volume 1)

By: Julie Mulhern

Rating: 5 of 5

thedeependThis was a really great read. I was about halfway through the book when I realized that I wanted to read all of this author’s back list. Imagine how surprised I was when I discovered that “The Deep End” is her first mystery. The author’s style is polished, the plot well defined, and the characters were impeccable.

Add to that, I really liked the heroine of this story. She was absolutely a child of privilege, but one who is trying to break out of the mold. She is a really funny lady and her daughter and mother are hoots, too. The murders are plausible and so is the solution – these are things that can make or break a murder mystery for me. I loved that I enjoyed the story and got to laugh my way through the book.

Second book in series is even better than the first

The Way of the Wicked (Hope Street Church Mysteries Book 2)

By: Ellery Adams

Rating: 5 of 5

thewayofthewicked“The Way of the Wicked” is the second mystery in the Hope Street Church series. As with the first book, I really enjoyed reading the upbeat story (well, at least as upbeat as you can get solving murders.) I liked this book even more as we get more depth about a number of the characters.

Good read but could have had better transitions

TITLE

By: AUTHOR

Rating: 3.5 of 5

sistersofshiloh“Sisters of Shiloh” is a very interesting book about two sisters who disguise themselves as men to fight for the Confederacy in the Civil War. The book has some fairly gruesome descriptions of battle scenes. It was more than I expected; however, it absolutely conveyed the horrific loss of life that happens during war.

Libby, the younger of the two sisters, goes slightly off-balance mentally after her husband is killed by the Yankees. She decides the way to avenge his death is to go to war in his place. When Josephine, the older sister, is unable to convince her not to go, Josephine follows her. While on the face of it, this seems far-fetched, it turns out that a good number of women actually did fight in the war disguised as men.

Lots of fun with Bizzy Bear and all the farm animals

Bizzy Bear: Fun on the Farm

By: Nosy Crow

Rating: 4.5 of 5

bizzybearfunonthefarmThis is really fun activity book. I purchased this book and one other from this series at a local big box store for when my grandson comes to visit on weekdays while his parents work. The activities come via push/pull sliders and tabs that you put your fingers into make items appear and disappear. Making the baby cow appear on the cover, making the chickens and rooster appear and then playing bye-bye with tiger on the tractor are his favorite activities. He grabs his book, comes over, and climbs on Grandma’s lap to have his favorite books read to him and this one makes its appearance several times a day.

These books are extremely sturdy but are not indestructible. My grandson is a very strong 16 month old and he was looking at the Bizzy Bear Pirate book and was trying to change the pages by pulling them apart. I stopped him in time but will certainly need to reglue the pages at some point soon. The books are so much fun I don’t hesitate to buy more of the series and at the same time, teach him to treat them a little more gently.
