Lots of twists in this near-future science fiction thriller
The Fold: A Novel
By: Peter Clines
Rating: 4.5 of 5
I enjoyed this book very much. It was attention grabbing from the beginning and the main character is one that I would certainly like to see in future books. In my opinion, this could be the first of a series.
About 30% into the book, I had a theory of what was going on. However, as the story unfolded more it became apparent that my theory was in the right direction but incorrect. There were a number of twists throughout the book that kept my interest and each time I put it down, I looked forward to the next time I picked it up to see what the author had coming up.

What is private today and what constitutes an invasion of it?
Invasion of Privacy: A Novel
By: Christopher Reich
Rating: 5 of 5
Invasion of Privacy” is the first book I have read by Christopher Reich. It was a really good read and definitely makes me want to go back and read some of his previous books. It was a very suspenseful thriller – with lots of action and plot twists throughout the book. I read it in one day because, frankly, I found that I could not put it down. The book is set in the Hill Country around Austin, TX, where I lived for a number of years and it was fairly accurate in its portrayal of the area and the individuals who would call that area home.

Interesting book about a hereafter of thirteen year olds
Boo (Vintage Contemporaries)
By: Neil Smith
Rating: 3.5 of 5
“Boo” is a fairly irreverent view of the hereafter told by thirteen year old Oliver Dalrymple. Boo (as Oliver is known) is writing a diary of his time in the Town, the place he ended up in after he passed away due to his “holey” heart. The diary is written in the form of letters to his mother and father whom he misses dearly.

Romance murder mystery set in New Orleans
The Dead Play On (Cafferty & Quinn)
By: Heather Graham
Rating: 4 of 5
“The Dead Play On” is the first book I have read in the on-going series by Heather Graham. While there was a slight paranormal twist at the beginning, it didn’t seem to have much of an impact on what happened in the rest of the book. Otherwise, the book is both an on-going romance between Cafferty and Quinn and a murder mystery. The two individuals are private investigators who have been asked by the police to assist in solving a crime that has strange (paranormal) overtones. Apparently, their PI firm specializes in such cases and are known around New Orleans for their involvement in other cases (i.e., previous books in the series.)

Fun story about finding your dream man
In Love with a Gentleman
By: Elisa Ellen
Rating: 4.5 of 5
When I first decided to read “In Love With A Gentleman”, I thought it might be a typical romance, which I would enjoy, but it turned out to be a story about a young woman’s journey of self-discovery as much as it was a romance. Lea is so determined to meet her dream man and make her dream life come true, she somehow neglects to check to see if dreams fare well in reality.

Interesting story with unusual characters
Crazy Mountain Kiss: A Sean Stranahan Mystery (Sean Stranahan Mysteries)
By: Keith McCafferty
Rating: 4 of 5
“Crazy Mountain Kiss” is the latest book in the Sean Stranahan series by Keith McCafferty; however, it is the first book I have read by the author. I often read books in the middle of a series in order to determine if the book can be read stand-alone or if it is necessary to read the whole series in order to enjoy the book. While I think this book can be read by itself, reading the prior books may add to the understanding of the relationships between the characters. That was the main area that I had some difficulty with while reading the book.

Cute Summer Read
Game of Scones (The Little Teashop – Book 1)

Rating: 4.5 of 5
“Game of Scones” is a cute and quick summer read. Pippa has come back to the small town of Taxos on the Greek island of Kos to decide what her future life is to be. Once there, she has to choose between the sophisticated life she has enjoyed in London with her Dutch boyfriend Henrik or whether she will take a chance on living her childhood dream of opening a teashop in Taxos. Confusing her even more are her new feelings for her old childhood friend, Niko. As Niko is engaged to someone else, Pippa has to keep her feelings to herself.

Interesting and enjoyable mystery
See Also Murder: A Marjorie Trumaine Mystery (Marjorie Trumaine Mysteries)
By: Larry D. Sweazy
Rating: 5 of 5
“See Also Murder” is a very well written debut mystery novel by Larry D. Sweazy. From the blurb at the back of the book, Mr. Sweazy has written Westerns previously, as well as having been and still work as an indexer – which is the profession he has chosen for the main character in this book. It certainly explains the skill with which her profession is presented, and is the basis for how she determines to solve the murders.

Okay read but not my first choice
The Unbelievable Top Secret Diary of Pig
By: Emer Stamp
Rating: 3 of 5
The book will certainly appeal to the target audience with the toilet humor and with the silly illustrations but I question whether or not children in early elementary school will be able to understand the misspellings and poor grammar. They are at an age where they are learning to spell and how to use grammar properly so it may just go past them. I’m not sure it would work well as a read-aloud book, either. All in all, it is an okay book but not one that I would recommend as a must have for a child’s bookshelf.
I received a complimentary copy of this book via the publisher.

Well written mystery with some unusual twists
Dying Brand (An Allison Campbell Mystery) (Volume 3)
By: Wendy Tyson
Rating: 4.5 of 5
While this is the third installment in this series by Wendy Tyson, “Dying Brand” is the first book I have read by the author. I often start series midway in order to judge how readable a book is stand-alone or if it is necessary to read all of the books of a series in order to enjoy the book. I was able to read this book fairly easily as a stand-alone but I really recommend reading the prior two books first. It is pretty obvious that there are relationships and characters whose depth would be enhanced by knowing their pasts.
