Murder and Mayhem in Academia – second in cozy mystery series
The Rise of the Red Queen (A Red Solaris Mystery Book 2)
By: Bourne Morris
Rating: 4 of 5
While this is the second book in this cozy mystery series, it is the first book I have read by this author. The focus of the series is on University life in general and on the interim dean of Journalism, Meredith Solaris, in particular.
Dr. Solaris, known to family and friends simply as “Red” is applying for the full time position of Dean of Journalism at Mountain West University. This is a university which is located in Nevada. Prior to this book (and presumably in the first book in the series), Red has saved the university’s “bacon” by solving a crime and by getting the school back on track. While that should make her odds on favorite for the full-time position, it turns out that two other outstanding individuals are also looking for the job.

Interesting but fairly slow mystery that is the start of a new series
Murder Most Malicious (A Lady and Lady’s Maid Mystery)
By: Alyssa Maxwell
Rating: 4 of 5
When I started reading this book, I didn’t realize that it was the beginning of a series. Because so much is being introduced in this book, it made it a rather slow read.
While there appears to be a murder most malicious, one isn’t sure about this until the very last few pages of the book. While that may have been intended to leave the reader guessing, I found the result to be less than what my imagination had been able to conjure up, so I was slightly disappointed at the outcome.

A great end to a fun and scarey series
The Last Bogler (How to Catch a Bogle)
By: Catherine Jinks
Rating: 5 of 5
This is the third and last book in the “Bogler” series by Catherine Jinks. I enjoyed both the first and second books just as well as this one and I recommend reading them in order to get the most out of the series. The book picks up shortly after the events of the second book in the series. The series concludes in a really interesting and satisfying manner and one that I was not expecting.

Murder Mystery set in a small Texas town
The Necessary Murder of Nonie Blake: A Samuel Craddock Mystery (Samuel Craddock Mysteries)
By: Terry Shames
Rating: 5 of 5
The author paints a realistic view of small town Texas life. I moved from California to Texas more than ten years ago and before that move, I would have thought the the characters and events in this book were a tad exaggerated. Turns out, I have learned better in the last decade. It is almost as if I know some of these individual. What is even more odd (considering I’m a long time big city girl), I love this about these small town folk.

A really good mystery and police procedural novel
The Girls She Left Behind: A Novel (Lizzie Snow)
By: Sarah Graves
Rating: 5 of 5
I was able to dive right into the action of “The Girls She Left Behind” without having read the first book in the series. I enjoyed the book well enough that I will certainly go back and read the first novel as it will undoubtedly fill in a lot of the background information on the characters. While that would be nice to have read, it wasn’t necessary for the action of the mystery in this book.
Lizzie Snow is a big city cop who has moved to a small town in Maine in hopes of finding her young niece, who was abducted years before in the same crime that left her motherless. There is a continued element in this story where Lizzie has her hopes raised and dashed or fears raised and relieved with regards to her niece.

Fun Adventure Story with an unlikely hero
The Goblin’s Puzzle: Being the Adventures of a Boy with No Name and Two Girls Called Alice
By: Andrew ChiltonR
Rating: 4.5 of 5
This is a fun tale about a slave boy who finds out that he is much more than what Fate has decreed for his life. The boy, who is nameless throughout much of the book, is sent on a trip with his master’s son – not really much more than as a pack mule. As it happens, it turns out to be a momentous trip and one that sets the boy on a quest to find out his true identity.

Excellent second in series murder mystery
Empty Nest: A Birds of a Feather Mystery
By:Marty Wingate
Rating: 5 of 5
This is the second book in this series that I have read and enjoyed. The murder mystery is set in modern-day England and has a bird-lover twist to it.
The sleuth is Julie Lancaster. She is the manager of the tourist center at the Fotheringill estate. She has a cozy little estate cottage but mold has been found and has to be cleared up. While the clean-up is on-going, she is staying at the manor home.

Another fun mystery in a good historical series
Death Comes To Kurland Hall (A Kurland St. Mary Mystery)
By: Catherine Lloyd
Rating: 5 of 5
I love a good cozy mystery set back in history. This story is from the Regency period in England and is the third book in the series. As I have read all three at this point, I can’t really speak for it being able to be read stand-alone but I do recommend both the series and the newest book, “Death Comes To Kurland Hall”.

Lovely Board Book of Pacific Northwest Animals and their sleeping spots
Where Do I Sleep?: A Pacific Northwest Lullaby
By: Jennifer Blomgren and Illustrated by Andrea Gabriel
Rating: 5 of 5
I am always looking for new board books for my young grandchildren. This is a lovely addition to our collection. The illustrations are so well drawn, I thought they might have been photographs. The poem of the book is in a lovely type of sing-song melody as I read it out loud. I am reading it just before nap time and we talk a little about the different animals.

Another Beautiful and Heartfelt story by Holly Jacobs
These Three Words
By: Holly Jacobs
Rating: 5 of 5
Holly Jacobs is an author whose books never fail to touch me. One of her recent ones “Carry Her Heart” had a profound effect upon me and I still think about it every few days. In “These Three Words”, Ms. Jacobs once again writes about a subject that evokes a strong response. In this book, she discusses how a couple can fall in love, get married, seemingly have everything working well for the future, and then, fall apart at the seams.
